I am: Lin545
My keyboard is: iOne Xarmor U9WL, o-ring modded
Favorite switch is: Cherry MX Blue

I switched from chiclet keyboards, because I found them to be extremely unreliable and regular (rubber domes) to be have a very high hit-miss ratio and very average keypress ergonomics.

Who's gonna challenge me?

Northgate Omnikey 101. Clickety-clacks more than a train riding through town. Heavier than an aluminum baseball bat, and more durable. Eats plastic-framed mechanical keyboards for breakfast.

Cherry switches? Hardly. They're probably named after something else round and red: Satan's Balls.

Don't even try to challenge that shit unless you're bringing an old IBM.

Okay, to be honest it's retired except when playing around with a customer's old PC. Still feels great, though. Gonna be in my casket when I get cremated. And then my wife will sell it, because it will still work.
IBM Model M keyboard from 1987

Haha! Same here - noisy as hell. Love / hate, mostly love. That Model M is a heavy beast, eh?

I really want to get mechanical, but just don't know what kind of keys to get. Not sure if the tactile bump would drive me crazy and would like to get something with a higher actuation than the lightweights. Too bad there's no where to try before you buy.

I'll stick with my insane-in-the membrane keyboard for a little while longer.
Not a traditional mechanical keyboard, but packs a punch in its own unique way: I am rocking a Topre Realforce 104UB.

And the quiet capacitive switches keep the office mates sane.

look for a computer store around you. I went to one near me and they let me test out the keyboards. that way you can also get a feel for the mx cherry vs khali etc. they are all a little different in their own ways.

Er, I have a Razer keyboard which is mechanical, I don't like it as it makes a heck of a racket. I now use this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Computers-Backlight-Optical-Fashionable-Waterproof-Keyboard/dp/B00MVTYUM2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Less than half the price of the Razer, quiet, and has a key where it glows blue :o)
i am actually looking at a Qpad with cherry MX switches
not sure if i should and if it could even come close to the magnificence of an model M

Whoa!! We have a professional here, ladies and gentlemen! =)

I saw one can silence it without consequences with pieces of rope cut to just of the length of the spring, inserted into the springs.

Excellent choice!

Thats a chinese made, good quality (as in "not higher" or "not top") keyboard with original cherry mx. Caps could wear out (but can be replaced), had to re-enforce the soldering around miniusb port. But otherwise its fine and solid (backplate, heavy good plastic and stuff). I would still prefer Ducky or Filco though, but I absolutely love wireless input devices and Majestouch 2 is way outside of my budget. The transmit quality is very decent, so can't compain.

Basically this. No issues with U9WL up to yet.

If you mean Blackwidow, its basically iOne. The older one was Cherry MX blue powered, the newer one is rebranded Kailh. You can silence the switch with: a) o-ring mod b) lubrication, so its absolutely silent.

The keyboard you linked is good for typing, seems to be great even if its membrane, as all "really waterproof" keyboards I know are foldable type and very inconvinient to use.

My first keyboard looked a lot like this:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5d/Remington_Rand_KMC_typewriter.jpg

Yes, it was really about that old. Yes, there was that much vertical distance between the rows of keys. Don't talk to me about rattle and strike force. :)

no no i like the clicky clacky of the keyboard
makes it sound like an actual tool instead of a toy

i mostly want the Qpad for the extra keys and the light up feature ( shallow i know )
otherwise the model M will most likely outlive all my hardware

it already did so far it will be 30 next year
