StingingVelvet: How evil or not evil Microsoft is has little relevance to the point that Linux is on an irrelevant amount of desktops and gaming PCs. Maybe if MS tries to kill 32 bit or whatever that will change, but the situation today is what it is.
I personally know more and more people so pissed off with Win10 they ask me for alternatives. Normal users, not geeks. People who simply want to get their stuff done - email, office, photos.

My mom was happy with XP and 7, now she's happy with Ubuntu, because it looks more like what she knows than any current Windows. And she tells other people about it. I've already had requests, which I'm reluctant to answer since I've no deep experience with Linux myself.

People are pissed of by Microsoft, and change can happen pretty quickly.

It can for some things, but let's be honest: if a huge shift to (desktop/etc) linux use hasn't happened yet, it's likely not gonna happen any time soon....well, barring things like what SV said and others happening, maybe.

yep , linux days wont happen

what i dont get linux fans always say so many people are pissed of by MS , then how come they didnt change their os?:O
truth is most people are completely fine with win10 and even if they try out linux they quickly jump back to win as it is way more user-friendly

The company currently profiting is... Apple. In Germany many schools and other public institutions are trying to get away from MS.

Of course Apple means just another vendor-lock-in for now, but this shows that MS is losing ground. And Apple is pricey. And it's already a Unix underneath - meaning people building knowledge there will have way less transition costs moving to Linux.

It may be different in the US, but in Europe there is a deep distrust in the way MS is going with Office 365 and all. People don't like it. The shackles might be the same with different vendors, but they are less obvious, and at least those companies still a care somewhat about quality and user experience.

I wouldn't say never...they might get more market share sooner or later....but it is a slim possibility that it will increase much, imo.

One would think the problems with Win10 would've at least dropped MS's market share in the desktop sector by a good margin...but they didn't....people are just used to what they're used to, and as long as it works(or they can configure it the way they want somehow) they usually stick with such instead of switching.

It's one of the same reasons people go to McDs and BK and other places over some more fancy food place: they just want a thing(in this case a burger or an OS), and to get it quick and easy

More so I think it's the abundance of choice....as said in this same reply in the last reply bit above: people sometimes don't want to be overwhelmed with options and just want something simple and easy, that they know.

This goes to show, imo, that price(linux being free and all) isn't everything for a number of people....some will buy something that's more expensive(or that has other negatives of purchasing it) for a number of reasons, such as simplicity of use(long ago iirc I recall apple being more or less set up so simple a young kid could use it...dunno about now, though) or brand recognition(many seem to love shiny apple stuff).

Sidenote: If anyone could get some of MS's desktop/laptop share, i'd guess it'd more likely be Apple than linux.

If the world in 2020 and 2021 has taught me anything, it's that people not liking something doesn't mean as much if no one does anything about it.

It costs money to train people in new OSs they're not used to, for one thing.

Indeed if win10 would have a huge problem people would have ditched it already
it happened with IE or the other browser before it
people not switching away from win10 proves it is a good OS

Yep , the biggest problem with linux is the way too many distros
the win user asks whoooh so there is no standard linux just these types , then which one should I use
and the answer is try them out and use which you like
I dont get how do they expect normal users would like to try them out and tinker with their os daily ...
The bubonic plague only had 50 million users.

I believe the issue of OS market shares in general are coming to an end. As more and more schools are dropping contracts with Apple and MS due to cost they are adopting Chrome OS because they are extremely affordable and come with no software license fee cost.

In the US alone many schools made this leap a 5 years back.

As the young get more time on X platform that platform takes center stage over time. For awhile it was Apple then it was MS stuff and now it's migrating to Chrome.

With more ppl going into browser based gaming and now cloud gaming, I believe the writing is on the wall.

Well more so it does what most want from it, and many don't like(or seem to like) unnecessary change.

It's choice overload....too many options overwhelm some people.

Back then that was a bigger chunk of the total population

There will likely always....always....be market share(user share) for various OSs as long as there is more than 1 OS.

Is anyone surprised when people really didnt have a choice?. (and no dont go on about linux....its bad enough people comment in this forum about x game having no linux version)....

Correct but the herd is moving towards Android/Chrome OS.

One almost always has a choice.....sure, MS dominates atm(desktops/etc in homes, I mean), but there's still choice: such as people legally(and not so legally) modding/tweaking their versions of windows as they see fit.

avatar
Niggles: (and no dont go on about linux....its bad enough people comment in this forum about x game having no linux version)....
Sidenote: some games don't have linux versions here because the rights holders sometimes differ for the same game between OS versions, and the ones who own the windows version might play ball with GOG while the ones owning the linux versions might choose not to.

Eh, that's fine.... as long as new windows versions come out and/or I can still play games on windows, i'll just keep using what i'm used to while the youngins in generation a/xir pass me by.
