Narakir: Sorry but corporations have to defend their brands and IPs, is not like all fan works are great, just look at all the fan work around Sonic on deviant art to see the value of protecting your IP :p
rampancy: I understand and agree to some extent with that argument. But in the case of games like SoRR, or the bevy of Pokemon fangames like Uranium, these are games made as expressions of love and genuine devotion for a company's IP. It's that same love and devotion that made these IPs important in the first place. These aren't games intended to compete commercially (unlike fan works like say, Star Trek Axanar, which IMO I felt was largely in the wrong), and even a casual observer would realize that these aren't officially released by the IP holder. And these games aren't even asking for sponsorship or official recognition. The IP holders are of course well within their rights to suppress any and all fan work as they deem fit. But between moves like these and the bevy of anti-consumer practices/self-defeating business decisions they make, it'll only be a matter of time before the well is inevitably poisoned and the hardcore fans they relied on so heavily to sustain their bottom line will start to drop.
