Carradice: She commands the scene whenever she is present, and her talent has only improved with the years (IMHO).
She was very good in both Galaxy Quest and Holes as well.

No idea about Holes, but I liked Galaxy Quest.

Did you watch Political Animals?

The camera loves her. And she can say more with the slightest hint of an expression in her eyes in a fraction of second than others with their whole bodies and a flare speaking for ten minutes at the sound of a band playing Copland.

Nope....might maybe look into it if I remember and fund some spare time, though. :)

Also Holes is a "kids film" based on the book...very nice, imo.

(It also stars Eartha Kitt in one of her final roles, and iirc Henry Winkler)
Bump!

Come and join the Sigourney Weaver fan club.
...I mean game of mafia.

Now imagine Sigourney playing the Queen. Wouldn’t it be nice?
I wanted to bump the thread and ask people to come in and play but SirMrFailRomp happened.

I happened all over.

who does Eartha Kitt play? I can only think of the mad old mountain woman, or the mother who turns up at the end of the film and I don't think has any lines...

did the mad old mountain woman sing santa baby?

You already have an avatar, and I already like how she's a snakewoman. Because in my head I always describe her as being "snakey." How'd you read my mind? That said, she doesn't look that black nor wear like that nor does the throne look like sand but at least we have a drawing of Hoda!

(I think she's tanned but not black, wears like an extravagant dress and her throne is made of a marble mosaic or some such)
I had hoped I was going use the other idea I discarded when I ran Gog's Restaurant as the theme for my next game, without derailing myself as I invariably do, but Rise of the Weavers where every player is a different Sigourney Weaver character is tantalising...

lol, you described "some snakey as heck queen" in the admin chat, as well as a ye olde Egypt setting and this is the image that came to mind and I had to draw. I was telling SirP that I felt a little embarassed about it because it's so obviously innacurate compared with your actual flavour ;p

I feel a bit like Josh Kirby drawing the artwork for the discworld novels. After about 25 seconds of not-fully-listening to the author I have an image in mind, and then the author comes along very politely and says "well, actually when I said she was snakey, I meant, you know she had a snake-like personality, I didn't think you'd draw her with a literal snake tail" and I, of course, reply "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STIFLE MY CREATIVE GENIUS!" >:0

Oh right I did. I'm super forgetful these days. Don't worry, it's inaccurate but I like it.

Actually keep going with your creative genius. But hmm....not sure what else could be taken incorrectly to be honest...oh well. Draw her with a snake head or something.

Also the title is incorrect. It would be "Mamlakat al Shams" since you can't just pronounce "Mamlaka" and "al Shams" without the flow of the words stalling. But of course I had to botch something. Thankfully this isn't the main game thread.

That's interesting, is it the equivalent of english's "a owl -> an owl" rule for arabic? Would it apply to any word that ends in a vowel?

Eartha Kitt played the old mountain woman, who was the ancestor of the character hector(zero) in that film.

As for the song....maybe she sang it....dunno.

=============================================

Also to everyone else(esp Carradice): I just looked it up(as I had a feeling I saw her in one film) and was right.....she plays the director in Cabin in the Woods(a decent if short role of hers), and she (surprisingly) also is the voice of the computer in Wall-E(which I didn't know till now).

No. Just words ending in "ta marbuta"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taw#T%C4%81%CA%BC_marb%C5%AB%E1%B9%ADah
It only appears at end of words. Normally pronounced as 'a" or 'ah' with a very silent 'h', when it has a "haraka"/diacritic (because of a grammatical case ending), then it's pronounced as "at".

In this case mamalka has a damma diacritic (short 'u') while al-shams has a kasra (short 'i'). The kasra should be silent, because it's at the end of the sentence, though some people pronounce it.
Also, the "l" in "al" is silent depending on the starting letter of the next word, and changes to that letter. "sh" is one of those letters. With the previous word ending with a vowel, sh is pronounced as part of it.
So closest phonetic pronunciation would be
"Mamlakatu'sh shams(i)"

That's interesting! I guess the mutation is has come about for the same reasons, in order to give separation between two vowel sounds even though in this case it's specific to one letter?

EDIT: Hah, I think I caught your post mid-edit:

When I read it it said this, but the reply box had the first version.
