New on GOG, Linux user.
Been learning the platform and playing a game this month via Lutris and Heroic Games Launcher.

Am I correct in saying that Lutris still dont have a working sync feature today without workarounds that are beyond most ppls skills and patience? ;(

I know Heroic can do it and I have been syncing game time from this app.
Heroic is a great, but it does use bit more cpu and run fans higher than when I use Lutris. + it has a constant dl/upload internet traffic, probably because of the store?

I am not a huge fan of this and never liked the steam launcher either because of the unecesary high bkground resources it took, mostly on principle. And the constant internet trafic even when idle.
I know u can block it in firewalls etc but meh, I do want the store access.
It also kinda glitches on me a bit when loading pages and Im unable to use the checkout when buying games directly from the app.
Wish u could play the game without these apps open same time, and then easily sync when u want without transferring files manually.

So if posible Id love to use Lutris instead, which feels better for me.
I just really miss the sync stuff and cloud saves on it so Ive been copy pasting my save files bk and forth so far which is blearghhh.

If anyone know of an easy tweak I didnt come across yet?
I saw the save sync script file stuff on github, but if thats the only option its beyond me and not worth the hassle tbh.

Or if GOG can pls make this posible for us Linux users and make a galaxy Linux version?
I hear its a recurring wishlist item, from me too;)

I checked other recent Lutris forum posts for this alr.

There is another launcher called Mini Galaxy you could try.

Should be lighter on resources and has a clean look. I haven't used it myself recently but it is still be supported with an update done in Feb 2025.

I have been having issues with Lutris recently as my version has been having issues when using Winetricks and lately has been failing on installing games completely. this may be a simple thing were I need to wipe it from my system and do a clean install though.

Will look at it ty :)

I have never had any real issues with either of the 2 cept once b4 similar to what u mention and eventually since I was doing a distro hop anyway, on new install it worked again.
Prob got its knickers in a twist somewhere , sometimes its easier to just reinstall everything xD

What about not using a games client/launcher at all?

Are there features you would really miss? If so, which ones? I might have alternatives to suggest that would not require some piece of bloatware as the single point of access to your games.
^^^ Just curious about this as well. Why would having your saves being off site be better, than on your own property?
Have you tried Playnite. I have heard its been on the stage for quite far.

I agree that this is a good independant way to play our games, and I alr do that with all my old steam games.
However I DO kinda like the 'profile activity' stuff, aka played timed, achievements being registered, and for some games also cloud saves, (have lost everything in a fire once including pc/save files to some creative focussed games where 1000s of hours editing was then lost, so thats one example of why I like that particular feature >< )
But with that said, def also always bkup save files manually physically if posible because u never know if ur account gets deleted or server bugs out etc and u loose everything in the cloud.

I bk up manually on remote drives now ofc, have install files seperate to use when i want in case the internet of things vanish one day and the zombies take over and I can finally put my bunker with bicycle driven power to gd use while I nerd away playing games like nothing has happened :P

Steam was great with this, but awful with everything else, I miss that site a lot less than I thought I would (21 yr account deleted including guides and hundreds of reviews), its a peaceful life now that I enjoy very much lol.

I have some games that I just play via exe file, but yeah I do also kinda like that 'connected' feeling sometimes.
Achievements tracking, played time, library lists and all these things.
I dunno, I love being 'off' most of the time, but sometimes its also nice to be 'on' if u know what i mean, and syncing ur progress to ur profile :)

I like how light Lutris feels vs Heroic/steam etc but ofc that might change one day if these things get added to it who knows.
Maybe I just need to use Heroic, but then Ill be using it offline, and manually syncing afterwards when I want and bleaurgh.
Maybe Lutris stores a 'played time' and achviement tracking file that I can transfer to Heroic and upload that way? Didnt find it for the one game Ive played here so far tho but will look into that then:)

For that I have nothing to suggest, as I never wanted such things in my games.
(I like achievements, but I want them to be in-game, offline ones)

This on the other hand I do without any kind of launcher. I use rsync for manual synchronisation, and sshfs when I want it to be automated instead.
Ive heard of rsync, just looked into those 2 u mentioned, but they look a bit above my skills and how much im willing to do for it for each game, instead of just copy pasting them manually.
But ty for suggestion! :)
This utility is awesome, give it a go :)

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/01/game-save-data-backup-tool-ludusavi-v028-brings-new-features/

ludusavi should do the job for you. Depending on cloud solution you have, it will automate everything and find your save files depending on each game from a database of locations (including if game messes with Windows registry). Cross-platform, written in Rust and snappy.

I have Filen, a German cloud storage service (I'm degooglifying and de-americanising everything) that is set to sync a local folder to the cloud (by watching it for changes). Then, I point ludusavi to save all files there. Simple stuff, but it works.

Automating ludusavi - you can either do CLI stuff with cron or systemd (comprehensive info in Github), or you just have your distro run a script at startup. This is quite easy, as it's basically just a "Startup program", depending on distro/DE.

To have ludusavi sync saves at startup and after exiting the game, is a bit trickier, but look at "Game launch wrapping" in the github wiki. The 'wrap' command should do the trick. Don't know, never used this functionality myself.
Never heard of this one, will give it a proper look too ty!

What about achievements, am I correct in saying that us on Linux cant have achievements on GOG b/c only their official Galaxy will work with them?
The game I just played didnt trigger anything after finishing it, on both Lutris and Heroic but perhaps they havent been added on GOG for that game tho,and only on steam.

Correct, Heroic has GOG achievements, but they don't show up in game. You will see them when you browse your profile on GOG. Lutris has no integration with Comet (the utility that provides achievements and playtime records from GOG), I don't know if it's scheduled to come.

I mean, if you want the 'true' dopamine-inducing achievement experience ;) , then try setting up GOG Galaxy with Lutris for example, or just vanilla wine. But that thing runs slow, and janky, is bloated, buggy and so on. Actually, you did mention you wanted to move away from bloated launchers...so maybe not lol

But if you are running Linux native games, I don't think there is a solution out there otherwise. Heroic GOG achievements only work for the Windows versions, not native games (not sure why, someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Alright, ty all I will give them a look and see if something works for me:)

Its true that physical saves and bkups and game exe's are always preffered to have urself so u own it, its a first priority, b/c once its in the cloud u dont own it and it can be lost.
But soooometimes its also really nice with these features :)

edit- not sure if I should mark something as the answer here, there are several that fits here.
But since I noticed on another post that I wasnt able to post b/c it had been marked as answered I think ill just leave this 'open' for now, so ppl are still able to reply with other ideas or in future etc.
Unless this is frowned upon? Still learning how this forum works (man than correct queote stuff I didnt master yet lol)
