So this thread is for generic chat of whatever pops into mind regarding games and gaming?
In that case, I just can't wrap around my mind over how different Homeworld Classic feels to the Homeworld Remaster.
I played both pretty recently, first the Classic last year, and yesterday i finished Remaster. It wasn't merely about having higher resolution textures and otherwise increasing the graphics quality, but there were even gameplay (difficulty) changes etc., as far as I can tell.
When I first started playing the Remaster, I had to re-learn the controls. I am not quite sure if that is because the controls are that different from the Classic, or if I had simply forgotten the controls during those few months between finishing the Classic and starting Remaster. Anyway, I played the Remaster tutorial and it (re-?)taught me how to play the game. I must say I always found the gameplay a bit "complicated" with how you try to figure out the three-dimensional navigation; the RTS games I usually play are ground-based 2D.
While the missions apparently were "the same" as in the Classic, they just overall felt much easier in the Remaster. Especially five missions pop into my mind:
1. Navigating the mothership through an asteroid field, destroying asteroids in its path.
2. The mission where a big asteroid is heading towards your mothership, and you must destroy it before the collision.
3. The mission where you were in a nebula or something where your ships kept getting constant damage.
4. The mission where you tried to destroy a big enemy ship which could incapacitate your bigger ships, and was accompanied by lots of heavy ships (you had to attack it with smaller and faster ships instead, trying to lure the big ships away etc.).
5. The mission where that "junkyard dog" keeps capturing some of your ships.
I recall struggling with these A LOT in the Classic version, having to play them several times, trying different elaborate tactics etc. In the Remaster, I think I finished all or most of these with my first try, and I was quite surprised by that.
Also the last mission... frankly I don't quite recall how it went in the Classic game, but in the Remaster it ended abruptly. I am not even sure what happened, suddenly I got a message "the emperor has died" and that friendly alien trader ship appeared, and then I got the ending cinematics. What?
My theory is that while I was fending off the enemies that kept attacking my mothership, the allied forces that appeared in the middle of the mission to help me, went ahead far away in the map, and they destroyed some big enemy ship that I was supposed to destroy in the end. Well, I was still so busy attacking the enemies near my mothership, and after that wondering what I should be doing next, and noticed some of those allied ships had travelled a long way to the other end of the map.
I thought "Oh, maybe I should be heading there too then?", but after a short while, the mission finished successfully. Oh well...
If I recall correctly, in the Classic version the enemy destroyed those allied forces even though I rushed to join their attack, and then I needed to wipe out the rest of the enemy fleet. However, if I recall right, the last mission wasn't particularly hard even in the Classic version, at least compared to those five missions listed above.
ANYWAY, I guess my point is that I'd prefer if the Remasters and such didn't change the gameplay so much, at least affecting the difficulty level, UNLESS it is apparent the difficulty level is whacked and broken (Hello "Forsaken"!).
All in all, I have to say I prefer the Classic version of Homeworld. Luckily it comes included with the "Remaster" package sold in GOG (and I presume in Steam), so you can play either, or both like me.
