ET3D: Thanks for compiling this list. Bookmarked. I think it would be useful to have a "don't require Steam" list, as opposed to just DRM-free. That is, if a game has DRM but doesn't require Steam, I'd like to know that. That could mean that I'll be able to run it even if Steam dies a horrible death, and that's useful information to know.
hmmm, would require some leg-work. First step would be some cross-cheking with this list:
http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/index.php?page=DRM_Lists/The_Big_DRM_List
which has all games on steam which uses a third-party DRM.
The Space Quest and Kings Quest collections will run sans Steam (bar the frontend, which you don't need - most of the games run in ScummVM, some run fine in DOSBox, others you can just run the executable directly).
Worms Blast can be added to those that need Steam to run

amok: By the way, Torchlight II can be added to the bin of games which requires steam
Has anyone tried this with the game bought directly from Runic or PW ? I believe those two versions don't require Steam.

Thanks. And we should add AZMD: Scorepocalypse to this list I guess. Also I'd like to ask if any kind of logging-in required for multiplayer counts as DRM too ? If not then Gal Civ 2 should make it to this list

Just a cursory glance tells me that list is not reliable. I see games we have confirmed to use CEG there, including some I tested myself. And Yet It Moves, for one, flat out refuses to run without Steam.

yes, same with Aquaria, it refuses to run without steam in any shape or form. strange list...

amok: strange list...
The problem with this list, and even the one in this very thread, is that, even if was accurate, it's only accurate at a specific T time. Nothing tells if one or two week later it will still be accurate as patch/DLC/whatever might add/remove DRM.

Well, obviously. But in general, most games that are a year old or more are patched only very, very rarely. And it's not a problem to retest them after a patch if needed.

That's like what happened with Skyrim -- The "shipped" version on Steam didn't require Steam, and it was patched the next day. The original program file was already floating around, and all you needed to do was replace it and boom, DRM-free.
There is already a database of DRM-free games on Steam:
