Sometimes we want to tell everyone about a game we really like, or we're looking for suggestions on interesting things to play and, this being a gaming forum, supposedly we like to both play games and talk about them, so I think doing a sort of book club for games would be perfect on the forum, we could actually have some interesting discussions.
There's a lot of doubts about this though, most importantly: is this something you guys would be interested in? Would you search for good recommendations to offer, and would you actually go out of your way to play the next game to be discussed? We need a fair amount of people to get this going, so I have to know if this isn't some harebrained scheme that only I would care about.
If you do want to try and make this happen, we should use this thread as an opportunity to discuss how to go about it.
I'm only certain of three things on how to do this:
1. The games need to be short so people, even the busiest of people, can play them. That means no 20 hour long RPGs, no 10 hour long shooters, even 5 hour long indie games are kind of pushing it, but those might be fine.
2. People can come and go from the club as they please, but we should have a set schedule of who recommends the next games in advance, that way we don't find ourselves in a situation where we don't have a new game to play, or we have multiple recommendations competing for attention.
3. The game should be available on PC, be easily obtainable (i.e. through digital distribution) and have an english translation.
Beyond that, there's so much to decide.
-> Should we restrict it to free games? That way everyone can play it. But I'm sure most of the interesting games people would like to recommend aren't free. Should we put a price cap on how expensive a recommended game can be? Should we restrict those recommendations to periods of deep discounts like Christmas? Or when the game is in a bundle?
-> How long should be the period between a game being recommended and the discussion begins? One week? Two? People should have the time to play the game without feeling rushed, but if the game is an hour long and you do it on the first the day, we don't want to wait too long for the discussion and forget everything by then.
-> Should we do it on a single thread and keep bumping it up? Or should we consider discussions of different games wholly separate? I'm partial to the latter since that way we can keep spoilers for games contained within a single discussion, and ideally we would have only one discussion running at any given time, but I wouldn't want to impose.
-> Are new games fine or should we restrict it to games that have been out for a specific amount of time or longer?
-> Should we call it "GOG gaming book club" or something else? It doesn't sound like I'm talking about a club revolving around videogame novelizations, does it?
I'm sure if we keep thinking about it we'll come up with other stuff that needs to be addressed, but I really hope we do. I think a gaming book club would be so much fun. I can think of one or two little games that I would love to hear people's opinions on, and assuming everyone else has their own couple of games they wanna talk about, we can be exposed to so much cool stuff we would never have seen otherwise.
