Having a pocket knife is not about stabbing people... /Looks at at least one psycho-scary post in the thread/ Well, not for most people, anyway. Otherwise, I wouldn't carry one myself ^^
It's mostly an handy tool/eating implement for when you're doing stuff outdoors.

(And a cool gadget to show off in front of your friends when you're not into high tech flimsy stuff like smartphones, okay ^^ )

True... Some items are purely for manslaughter, like a sword. (bows and guns can be used for hunting, but not a sword...)

I also have a Kershawwith a tanto blade and liner lock that a buddy gave me that's pretty nice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend those.

I have a few Victorionox, including a "Swisschamp" and this monster "Workchamp XL" that I got when I was in Germany. Victorionox are extremely high quality and highly practical knives.

Lastly, Al Mar if you can afford it.

I've pretty much decided on a victorinox, for pretty much the reasons you said and the fact I can carry it around like I'd do with any other tool. I couldn't do the same with a schrade kukri

Hurm I'm thinking of getting one of the little ones too, the shipping costs the same anyways.
I was thinking of the rambler but the damn thing is actually among the more expensive ones. Then I noticed that the rally is almost half its price, exchanging the scissors for a philips screwdriver.

How useful are the scissors of a mini victorinox if at all? I actually think the screwdriver/bottle cap combo will be more useful.

Speaking of Opinel: I've got one in size 8 and it's an awesome tool for the price, can't imagine another trip without one. Opinels rock. I mainly use it for cutting bread, apples or rope when on a festival and it really doesn't need much space.
I'll probably get another size of those too.
For some other non-violent tasks that need a stronger blade, more distance between the object and yourself or a straight long cut, a dagger is more useful, that's why some hundreds of years ago it was a common tool to always take with you.

Go for the SwissChamp I mentioned. It's smaller than you'd think, maybe 1 1/2 cm wide, and has a ridiculous range of tools and a good knife blade (2, actually). The cost is pretty reasonable for what it does.

I broke a pair of pliers (yes, the thing has a mini pair of pliers that're tremendously useful) on mine one time and Victorionox replaced the whole thing. Can't beat their lifetime warranty.

I have had a lot of these over the years but this one may well be the best one. It's a Kershaw 1990 Brawler Folding SpeedSafe Knife. Absolute best. Cleanest open, nicest blade, best looking, most useful and practical. Best quality also, I've dropped it and it has never felt like it was harmed by it. I don't exactly know what purposes you had in mind but this one does very well for whatever I threw at it (including carefully opening those stupid cardboard/paper CD cases).

This one friend of my buddy's couldn't see the point in us carrying knives everywhere until he himself did and just found himself using it almost everyday. They are incredibly useful things. And they are nice for conversation if you're like me and sometimes just run out of other ideas.

Which is funny. 100 years ago everyone carried a Jack knife (folding knife) it was common sense, and you used it all the time. Today we're seemingly taught and insisted not to carry them around, much like we're pretty much taught not to carry water or other tools with us. Just because we're in an urban environment where there's food and water at plenty of convenience stores doesn't mean it's a bad idea to carry necessities with you.

i always carry a knife, but prefer a fixed blade as I have a hard time with folding knives due to dexterity issues. This is my current favorite, very lightweight and elegant while keeping the blade legal length.

My daily EDC includes 5 knifes. Although only 2 of them i'd use regularly and 2 are part of my leatherman so are backups.

I've decided to get myself an EDC on a whim, and after some thought I've chosen on purchasing a swiss army victorinox knife. I've managed to narrow my choices to 3: The classic, the rambler and the tinker small. The classic SD and the rambler make for good keychains, but they're extremely small. The Tinker Small looks more like a proper EDC blade while still small, light and non-threatening enought to carry in your pocket comfortably.

Thoughts?
My EDC knife is my Leatherman Wingman. I love this thing, just the right amount of tools for every day carry. It truly is my wingman. I recommend this one due to the lower cost. You can find it cheaper at other retailers.

Then again I enjoy practicing survival so perhaps my selection is overkill. Gerber brand is a nice cheaper alternative also. Leatherman has a way better warranty though. 25 years. My current Wingman I've carried for around 4 years (ever since it was released in 2011 I believe it was) now with no issue.

I carry the Charge TTi in my bug out bag and this thing is a beast. Used to be my EDC before the Wingman. It is quite hefty though and certainly could be considered overkill for every day carry unless your work requires tools constantly. A ton of useful tools. Weight being the issue though at 8.2 ounces, then add in any extra bits and extension adapter for 1/4 inch hex bits if you buy them too.

Whatever the brand you get, always make sure it has locking tools and blades. Nothing like using a blade or tool and having it fold shut on you, or worse, catching your hand in between gashing your hand open. The Swiss is a good brand that many people swear by, I've had several myself that I've given to my grandpa because he likes collecting them. But these are just not the style I like to carry.

Of these multi tools, and any multi tool I've used, the one feature I generally don't care much for is the scissors. It just feels awkward using them to me, but they are functional and I've used them on multiple occasions.
