So Klei (Shank, Don't Starve) are now majority controlled by Tencent .

Tencent has acquired Funcom, Riot Games (League of Legends), Grinding Gears Games (Path of Exile) and have investments in Platinum Games.

They censored Shank, so I don't like them for that reason.

Although I have been playing Mark of the Ninja: Remastered lately. But I didn't know it was from the same people who had censored Shank.

If I did know that beforehand, then I would have strongly reconsidered whether or not I want to buy the Ninja game from them, and I may well not have done so.
That "boring accounting changes" line seems so forced it's almost like a deflection of sorts.
Apparently (I cannot remember where I read the article) Tencent spent the most money in acquisitions in 2020 and acquired the most studios.
And people wonder why Microsoft moved to buyout Bethesda, and EA buying Codemasters...the alternative is having them bought by Tencent or Google. You especially do not want game companies bought by Google.

My prediction for the future: Tencent will attempt a major share of Sony's gaming division to get into the console market, to whatever extent Japanese law will allow such a thing. If that doesn't work out they will make their own console/streaming solution (with Epic remaining the PC side of things). The same way Sony did in the 90's when their deal with Nintendo failed. The same way Microsoft did when their attempted Nintendo buyout failed. Tencent are massive, Microsoft EA and Ubi will probably form a loose alliance to counter them from acquiring too much, and keep the money in the "old-school".

Probably many small studios will also rise up to counter this. Many people don't trust Tencent and won't be giving them any bit of money. (yeah yeah I know... they have X% of many companies already... yadayada... still... many people won't support them.)

And in Waterworld, dirt is effectively gold.
Does this mean future dlc for existing games will strictly go Epic only?
They were acquired, thus its seen as profitable investment. They were sold, thus original holders valued it lower than the new ones. Acquisition is in nature of the economic side / slice, since the titles are commercial, the side / slice is given. Recommended course of action: backup and offline mode (as emergency).
