If you like Sonic CD (available on Steam), Freedom Planet should be a good play. Read Only Memories is inspired by Snatcher, which was one of the best games for the Sega CD add-on. Aquaria would be reminiscent of Ecco.

Aquaria mainly felt Ecco-like in that it's a game set underwater, in terms of gameplay and also the feel of the world, the games are quite different.

Stooner: Kid Chameleon is also a great one, and has A LOT of stages.
My experience is that people who did not grow up with Kid Chameleon react very differently to it than people who have nostalgia for it.

No, personally I grew up with the MD and have mostly transitioned to emulators today. But the steam one isn't the most accurate out there, and there are still minor differences in the sound on all emulators.

Broforce was probably inspired by Gunstar Heroes and the like.

Mega Drive/Genesis, Dreamcast, and a Win/OSX/Linux release where you can choose to not install and play directly off the disc. I bought all three, despite not having a Dreamcast yet.

There's also the digital download version of the Win/OSX/Linux as well. I hear that a site known as GOG has it for sale. Ever heard of it?

By the way, Phantasy Star 4 is also good. PS2 and PS3 are mixed bags; you might like them, but both games have major flaws. (PS2 is the only main series Phantasy Star game I haven't beaten.)

I didn't start seriously Gaming as a passion until 2011 when I bought Bioshock and the Orange Box to see what my new PC could do and found out FPS games were the best thing ever!
So I think it's fair to say I missed the heyday of the Sega Genesis.....

Gaming wasn't part of my life growing up. I didn't even know what a SNES or a Atari 2600 was till I was 22. And Even now 100% of everything I play are either PC Games or PC ports. I've never owned a console. Though I hear tempting things about the PS2 and the Sega Dreamcast library.

But I recently started playing some Genesis games I got off Steam. Shinobi III, Streets of Rage and Altered Beast. And I'm really enjoying them.
I'm not very good at them so far but they seem so damn cool. I feel like I could really fall in love with these and the other Genesis games in my Steam Library (I Really want to try Shining Force). They just seem to hit this odd sweet spot of of reminding me of all the Action movies, comics and Cartoons I loved growing up in the 90's and 2000's. Playing Streets of Rage takes me right back to Long summer nights watching VHS movies like The Warriors, Highlander and Judgement Night. It's like someone took a snapshot of my teens :')

So, is it too late to become a Genesis Fanboy in 2016?

Do I have to buy an actual Genesis or can you only use PC ports and still call yourself a fan? Are there any good Genesis-Inspired games on GOG? How many people are going to tell me you can't be a Genesis fan unless you not only play them on the console but also as a small child eating Lucky Charms in 1990? If That's the case I'm screwed. I spent most of 1990 as a fetus and I I'm pretty sure they don't sell Lucky Charms in the UK XD

The criteria for becoming a sega genesis fanboy is

- Shed a tear after playing phantasy star 4
- Accept shining force 1 & 2 as the best rpg ever
- play and complete Golden axe with a online partner
- play and complete Streets of rage with a online partner
- Accept genesis version of alladin is better than snes


Getting the original console to play these games is the best experience but this being the modern times

- if you own a console get the genesis collection there they are available for both ps3 and xbox 360, some titles are individually released with online functions( xlive & psn )

- If you are ok with steam there is a good collection there as well with mod support

I have dabbled with the mobile ports, emulators, pc ports, console ports, here is my rating of them from

The Good experience
-The best experience original console with carts original sound, original graphics can't go wrong here .
-The second best experience are the console ports aka the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic's_Ultimate_Genesis_Collection
and the individual title releases on psn and xlive , they are made great with stable software and great collection of extras, unlockable etc.
- I even have the genesis collection on the psp for the good portabilty it was alright
The Bad experience

- The mobile ports are bad , the touch controls ruin the experience and the sound is just awful avoid at all costs
- Sega released the genesis collection twice on steam and both times its terrible the ui is just slow and has issues running the games at full speed, mod support is good but just a pain to play it there.
- Never ever play the genesis games on the nintendo portables they are just emulated poorly.

If you are looking into the actual hardware the Genesis is still pretty affordable if you look around a bit.

There are several models but it would be best to stick with an original Model 1 or 2. If you are a stickler for sound get an early model 1 as later models used cheaper sound chips which hurt audio performance a little bit.

The prices of games hasn't jumped like they have for Nintendo systems but there are still a handful of games that climb into the $100 range.

Or you can take suggestions from both sides and get the system but then get an Everdrive and load that with game ROMs so you can get the hardware authenticity without breaking the bank on games, the Genesis can also play Master System games (through either a convertor or an Ever Drive) so it really opens up a lot of gaming possibilities.

Well aware of the download releases, I just specifically replied only with the various physical releases.

Grew up with a Genesis.

Great Stuff =
-Streets of Rage Trilogy.
-Sonic Trilogy, ESPECIALLY Sonic 3 combined with Sonic and Knuckles expansion. Probably the first console expansion in history. Sonic, and especially Sonic 3 spoiled me on platformers and I've never been able to enjoy a Mario game after playing them.
-Batman & Robin. Loved the music in this one, early work from Jesper Kyd (Hitman series to name a few of the things he's worked on).

If it seems odd that I'm kind of focusing on the music of sega games, it's because even though I don't play Genesis games anymore I still love listening to songs and remixes from them to this day. SNES may have had the better sound card but Sega seemed to get better artists working on their games.

1. No, it's never too late to become an aficionado of anything.
2. No, it's not needed to buy an actual Genesis, unless you feel like you really need one.
3. It doesn't matter what others say, if you're a fan of something, you're doing it for yourself, not for the others.

That being said, you have so much to discover about PC gaming (plus console gaming) that it's almost terrifying -- Amazingly terrifying! :)

He/She also need a good CRT display, or a modded Genesis. :-/
Well, CRT is cheap as garbage now.

Trust me, at this point Sega needs as much "fanboy" as they can get (although they seem to shit on them when they can).

There are some pretty good Megadrive compilation. Such as "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" and "Sega Genesis Arcade Ultimate Portable 2016".

Instead of confusing you with a ton of recommendations. It's better to just recommend a single game, although not a Sega game. I recommend.............Chrono Trigger, however avoid the mobile phone version.
