Cause there's no business like show-business!

Our DRM-Free approach to digital distribution has been the foundation of GOG.com since day one and we're convinced it is now firmly rooted in the gaming industry landscape. More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. We think this is a good time to take the next step in our quest to make digital entertainment better for everyone. Today we set out to spread our DRM-Free ideas across the movie industry! That's right: GOG.com now offers DRM-Free movies.

Our goal is to offer you cinema classics as well as some all-time favorite TV series with no DRM whatsoever, for you to download and keep on your hard drive or stream online whenever you feel like it. We talked to most of the big players in the movie industry and we often got a similar answer: "We love your ideas, but … we do not want to be the first ones. We will gladly follow, but until somebody else does it first, we do not want to take the risk". DRM-Free distribution is not a concept their lawyers would accept without hesitation. We kind of felt that would be the case and that it's gonna take patience and time to do it, to do it, to do it right. That's quite a journey ahead of us, but every gamer knows very well that great adventures start with one small step. So why not start with something that feels very familiar? We offer you a number of gaming and internet culture documentaries - all of them DRM-Free, very reasonably priced, and presenting some fascinating insight into topics close to a gamer's heart. Now, what do we have in store for you?

- There's a whole new Movie Catalog for you to browse!
- All the movies we sell are priced at $5.99 (that's a launch promo price for a few of them), and we aim to have that as the main price point for most of our future releases
- Two of the movies - The Art of Playing and TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard are available for FREE, so that you can test our new movie distribution features
- Most of our movies are in Full HD 1080p quality, some in 720p. With those of you with limited bandwidth or download quota in mind, we also supply much lighter 576p versions.
- Apart from downloading your movies you have the option to watch them streaming online, right here on GOG.com
- GOG.com is famous for its bonus goodies - each movie will come with as many of them as we can muster
- You can expect subsequent movie releases each week

That's it. GOG.com Movies is a go, time to get some popcorn!
Please, please, please get Astrópía!
It would match the collection so far wonderfully and is a great movie that should get more recognition!
Not an impressive launch selection GOG.

Personal opinion: You should have gone with ebooks instead.
There is one change that GOG should make to the movie shelf: When a movie is selected or the cursor is put over it, a synopsis should be given.
Wait, so you tell me that there will be an option to buy digital copies of my favourite movies and series and download them whenever I wish, instead of purchasing cluncky DVDs? This is the first time every I'm considering to stop pirating media.

If you get any of the Joss Whedon shows up here, I'll be throwing my money at you in huge quantities. Just saying.
I really loved that move. Though I have seen as many gaming documentaries as I can, most of them I wasn't even aware of. Thanks and good luck trying to convince the big players to join. I guess you need some strong indies to make enough noise and be successful via this method to make the prospect alluring for them.

And thanks for the 1080p. :)
I like movies a lot, so first I saw the news my reaction was "YAY, GREAT!!!", but seeing catalog... "Well...ehm...nothing else?"
Let's be honest - there is no movie in the catalog yet, there are some hipster's documentaries...but not THE MOVIE I'm willing to spend time watching it - I would rather play games instead...
And even more: pay for it that money? Maybe if there is possibility for some rental option.. for $1, then maybe?

IMHO movies looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYEfJhkPK7o&list=UUEK3tT7DcfWGWJpNEDBdWog
Well, the catalog is not that good, but it is good to see the DRM free ideals expanding, now it is just a matter of time to see it reaching books and comics, which could tie in with some of the franchises sold by GOG.

I can't wait to see GOG expanding to all media available, I would definetly prefer GOG over Netflix.

Yeah, though it's kinda expected, the big movie studios like Warner Bros are notoriously conservative about this type of thing, heck they're the main people who lobby governments and the like to shut down torrent sites, and are the biggest supporters of copy-protection out there. I have to doubt that much will come from this except some low-budget indie type stuff, certainly not major films.

Anybody else having trouble actually downloading purchases? GoG downloader keeps crashing on me for some reason. Streaming works fine.

Going to try again later, in case this is just a temporary technical issue. Kinda defeats the entire point of DRM-free if I can't the stuff I freaking pay for.

I figured I'd try the free ones, but I'm not paying even $5.99 for most of these documentaries. Documentaries are mostly one-view-and-I'm-through for me.

BUT get real movies, even really old classics like Casablanca, on here that I can download and hoard forever on my hard drives or in the cloud without funky DRM, and I will gladly pay you a reasonable sum.
I made a wishlist entry for Astropia:

Please consider voting! It's such a wonderful movie!
On the whole I think this is a good idea - I'd been hoping for a while that Amazon would get this done. I'm way past the point of wanting to buy physical disks to clutter up my shelf space, but the existing download services are DRM-infested and here in Germany they don't really offer the original versions of the movies they offer.
Of course, GOG's current selection is somewhat flattered by the term "underwhelming", but once we get real movies I expect I'll be a customer.
Cross-posting from another thread:

Nice idea. Mediocre content. In fact, the kind of movies they're showing are literally the last kind of movies that I'd want to own DRM-free. It might be amusing to watch the cosplay documentary once, but that's what rentals and streaming are for; I don't need to buy it.

I would have much rather seen DRM-free e-books. There are major authors who have embraced that movement, so they could have possibly started with some big-name content right off the bat, and there's no "Netflix for books" that I can go to to just stream a book I'm curious about.
DRM-free movies, eh?

You guys don't keep it cut. You guys keep it real! You are my homies! Congratulations on the DRM Free new uptake on movies! Now, the DRM FREE "music" lies in the horizon, right next!
