Depending on the IP it isn't always that expensive. I almost bought the Star Control IP when it went up for auction >.> I was working overseas at the time and didn't end up able to get a lawyer in time, but that should give you an idea how cheaply some IPs auction. Probably wouldn't have known what to do with it anyway. :P
