Strijkbout: I think copious sprout consumption is the cause of this malady.
you know, the sprouts this year were not up to par. i dunno if it was a funky harvest or what but i just stuck with broccoli most of my meals.

I don't know if it's difficult to get your hands on passionfruit in the US of A, but not only it is delicious, it also is extremely well known for its calming effects, being regularly used to combat anxiety and insomnia. And did I mention how delicious it is?

You'll probably love both the sweet and sour varieties.

Every evidence reinforces my theory that sprouts are evil. Evil, I tell you!

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that researchers discover a link between a high consumption of broccoli and insomnia... I mean, I don't have anything corroborating this, but it's possible right? You could try cutting back on broccoli for two weeks and see if your sleep improves.
Camping over a weekend can completely reset your clock.

yeah but ive been consuming vast amounts of broccoli/sprouts/etc for almost 18 years. no joke, im currently in my mid 30s and i used to competitively bodybuild. i don't compete anymore but my diet has stayed largely the same: a lean protein, a lean carb, and pile of broccoli or sprouts. the only difference is now, instead of eating that meal 8 times a day, i eat it 4 (i haven't competed in 9 years). and on the weekends i like beer, which does help me sleep, but that's not a habit i wish to start.

this insomnia started in the middle of last month, and ive never quite experienced anything like it. ive always been a sort of light sleeper, but nothing has changed that i can think of in my daily regiment.

*sigh*
I've been quite exhausted lately, and I feel like I'm missing sleep.. and not sleeping well enough.

As a matter of fact, I dozed off and kinda fell asleep in the mall during my 5+ hour lunch break.. not that it was good or deep sleep. I had to go for a cup of espresso after that (damn what a small cup that was.. barely a sip, even though I ordered double size too). When I got home, I tried to work for a couple drowsy-feeling hours. Not good. So I finished work planning to have a good nap but nothing came of it, I just couldn't fall asleep despite feeling I needed it more than ever before. So here I am, letting the evening pass by and turn into night, unable to do anything productive. Sigh. (Maybe I can do laudry at least? Nah it's too late for that)

Come to think of it, I took melatonin last night and I still couldn't sleep too well. Usually I'm ok with melatonin.

So yeah. Some insomnia here and there.

To me constantly checking the time is the most disruptive. It definitely has a lot to do with the screen light that was already mentioned but just the fact I knew what time it was and how many minutes/hours I have already wasted on trying to fall asleep was even worse. Then I would count how many hours I have left to fall asleep, realize it's way too litle to wake up rested, and end up feeling anxious which kept me wide awake.

Another thing I've heard helps is drinking warm water with honey or sugar (doesn't sound too great, I know... you could also try milk instead of water) right before going to bed. /
Also, if you are really struggling to fall asleep, getting up for a while actually helps. Supposedly it prevents your mind from associating your bed with inabbility to sleep, but I haven't tried that myself and don't know if it's true. Couldn't hurt to try, I guess?

Hopefully you will overcome your insomnia soon!

fortune_p_dawg: ...how tragically underrated the starship troopers movie was...
That keeps me awake too, IMO it is one of the best sci-fi action movies ever made, I would put it right next to Terminator 2, Aliens, Predator and Matrix as a classic. What they did with the sequels is a crime (I actually like the second one though, at least it tried something different). I guess I could say the same for the sequels of other movies I mentioned.

But what is also fascinating is that there are no games in that franchise. There is a new Warhammer 40 000 game released every week, but no Starship Troopers games, except the two low budget games from 2000 and 2005. There was also Outwars from 1998, which is Starship Troopers in everything, but name.

Ah I see. I had meant in the sense that maybe broccoli harms your sleep while other sprouts don't, because it would fit with your escalation of broccoli intake while other sprouts reduced.

But with your explanation I don't think it fits. It would be weird to have your diet change several months before the new diet's supposed effect kicks in. No ideas anymore other than the passionfruit I mentioned above, sorry.

Actually, there's two ideas. If the insomnia isn't over soon go see a doctor. Either that or hold on until Gog puts up a new insomnia promo because you'll be in the advantage then :-)

fortune_p_dawg: ...thinking...
I think that's the root cause right there.

At night time it's best to empty the mind... and not worry about stuff such as that mysterious Oumuamua object that may have been an alien spaceship that deployed nanobots as it passed through our solar system * which are then going to do who knows what...

* can't claim to have made this up myself as there's already lots of threads out there... that are... far out there ;)
There's a saying that I have always kept in mind from Charlotte's Web: "...When your stomach is empty and your mind is full, it's always hard to sleep". That is very true. Eating a couple hours before going to bed to avoid the empty stomach really helps.

Also, lighting in your environment and your electronics. Changing that has changed my sleep habits dramatically. There is stuff like flux for your computer or Red Moon for you phone depending on what you have to get rid of blue light. There's a night light feature on Windows 10 which helps with that as well. Even though it's hard to forego the habits, you could at least get rid of the primary cause of why your brain thinks its day time when checking your phone or being on your computer late nights.

Yellow incandescent light bulbs or similar colors really help with falling asleep as white light has the same effect as your brain thinking it's daytime. That's why they use daylight type lighting in offices. So white and blue light should be rid of when you're trying to fall asleep. Really wish I had known this stuff sooner.
Yeah, I only smoke weed when I need to,
And I need to get some rest. Yo, where's the cess?
I confess, I burned a hole in the mattress,
Yes yes it was me, I plead guilty,
And at the count of three I pull back the duvet,
Make my way to the refrigerator,
One dry potato inside, no lie,
Not even bread, jam,
When the light above my head went bam.

I can't see, something's all over me,
Greasy. Insomnia; please release me,
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth,
But there's no relief,
I'm wide awake in my kitchen,
It's black and I'm lonely.
Oh if I could only get some sleep?
Creaky noises make my skin creep,
I need to get some sleep.
I can't get no sleep.

It's always interesting in music where you put one single thing to another harmless single thing and then boom huge emission of energy wtf

Good advice.

I have to say, I clicked on this thread hoping for discussion about an upcoming insomnia sale :-)

Celton88: Good advice.
It can also completely ruin your weekend, and your sleep that weekend, which ends up ruining your next week too.
