Just got a notice in my email that they're going to be adding Sales Tax to the cost of the Humble Bundle Monthly deals.

This is for the U.S., I don't know if it is going to apply to the rest of the World.

If you haven't been overly thrilled with some of their offerings, could be a good time to bail.

Also don't know if this is going to apply to their regular Weekly Bundles or not . . . once you start going down that road . . .
Just got the e-mail myself. Looks like they'll credit a small amount on the next one

Hello Humble Monthly Subscriber,

Your subscription price will increase with your next payment to account for <INSERT STATE> sales tax. This change to subscription billing is required for parity with national tax guidelines.

Thank you for being a loyal customer of Humble Bundle and a Monthly Subscriber. We value your continued support and look forward to to providing you with more awesome Bundles. With your help, the Humble Bundle community has raised over $80 million for charity!

We have applied a credit to your next month's subscription of $1.20 as a thank you for sticking with us through this transition.

Sincerely,
Humble Bundle

I got a question. Have they stated which states will be hit with sales tax. Because if they go for monthly, I am assuming they are going for everything-at least in my state.
Well, there was a narrow chance as it was that I'd buy into this "pay $12 for a random list of games you have no control over" gimmick, but with the sales tax as high as it is in California? The chances are now nil.

Goodness, I hope not. I mean, I understand that they have a business to run and all, but that just runs up the price so much higher...
Any idea why they have to implement this now?

I opened a Ticket on the HB site asking if the credit applied to the HB Monthly that unlocks on 10/7, or if the credit is for the November Monthly.

Unless the November Main draw looks pretty good I'm going to cancel my Sub (this Month is only the second I've done this).

I also asked if they were going to add tax to the Weekly Bundles as well.
Forgot to ask about Humble Store purchases, but I'd guess it'll be just like the Monthly.

I'll follow up with them and post what I find unless someone else gets more info first.

For me, I'm looking at 10% or more Sales Tax (depends on how they figure/rate it), so it's a decent impact.

I am not for Internet & Sales Tax - total BS. Never had it for Mail Order, shouldn't have it for Internet.
One reason I rarely shop Amazon as well - too much tax kills the deal, plus their ridiculous shipping.

Sorry, I'm more of an ass-man myself. ;-)
Aren't there a few states with no sales tax, like Oregon?

Yup.
Buncha cheaters.
That sucks, hope it doesn't spread to other purchases and/or other countries also. I don't use Humble Monthly myself as it's not my cup of tea, but if any gaming sites start charging tax in Canada then they better either eat the price difference or lose 13% of my purchases which will account for the difference in price. (13% taxation in Ontario)

Seems like a pretty raw deal for Usians.

Doubtful. They mention national tax guidelines in the e-mail Foxworks quotes, which I assume is related to some sort of US Federal law. In Canada, if your company does not have a physical outlet in the country, you don't have to charge sales tax on digital purchases. If Humble starts doing so, it would be nothng more than a money grab.

Yeah, any company doing it without reference to a law requiring it would definitely permanently lose my patronage for doing shady business. Hopefully people speak out against these things so they don't spread.

As far as I understand it, that's also what the law is in the U.S., except companies with online stores also have to charge sales tax if they have any shipping centers and/or warehouses in your state. So maybe this means Humble is planning to start shipping physical goods for certain items in the Humble Store.

Then again, the rules for online sales taxes in the U.S. seem to have changed a lot over the years, with fewer and fewer places being exempt from online sales tax. So this could just be the result of some kind of recent change in the law that I haven't read about yet.

10% sales tax, that would be nice. Try 24% VAT.

We have 25% VAT except for books that's 8%.
