KatTruewalker: Well, as questions about pirate genre games don't come up all that often, yes, as a matter of fact, I'd search the forum and find out if there were any similar threads rather than repeating ad infinitum things that have already been posted.
As I understand it, Gog are intending to bring out multiplayer servers? Gog Galaxy?
DukeNukemForever: While GOG is working on a client to allow playing games online against others it's very unlikely we will see a MMO-game here. It's a big difference to just connect some players to play a shooter or a strategy game then to run a whole world 24/7 for multiple users. For doing this you need to run special servers and to give heavy support, which costs much money and manpower. GOG very likely can't afford this, especially for a technically unknown product from another company. The only chance I see is something similar like Minecraft, which means the software company gives out the server software to allow fans to run their own servers at home or rent a server.
Thanks for explaining, it was a small game by mmo standards but with an active player base, I know there would be pirates interested in hosting their own servers or renting, and this seems to be a possibility in a lot of indie games now, I rented a server for Rust for a while which was fun and had a good capacity.
I can see Disney not wanting to allow any of this sadly, which is why we're looking to a company like Gog to help us out.
tinyE: While I agree you can never have enough pirate games I should point out that all of the following GOG tiles are either about pirates or at some point involve being a pirate.
ID War 1 & 2
Port Royale 1 & 2
Tropico Reloaded
Tropico 3 Gold
Sid Meiers Pirates
I may be missing a few.
Fever_Discordia: Pixel Piracy
SPAZ (Space
Pirates And Zombies) - I guess that one counts
Risen - apparently
and Monkey Island series, as another poster pointed out
*edit* these were probably added in the
2 YEARS since TinyE posted that, to be fair!
It's true, there are a number of single player pirate games out there, not brilliant ones though. I'm waiting on Raven's Cry too which is due at the end of this month hopefully.
The thing is, you have strategy pirate games, single player, games where you can direct your ship and take part in battles. But. There are none (excepting Archeage, which I discount because it's sailing, yes but not quite there) which allow you to sail your ship and fight alongside a player crew.
There are a couple in development ~ Naval Action and Blackwake, these are looking promising but are going more for the authentic 17th century sailing experience rather than pirating per se.
Thanks for your reply though :)
