grimwerk: In gunsynd's defense, Tarnicus, you appear to be an articulate and intelligent, able-bodied fella with a friendly aspect (judging by your recently posted pics). Though you do make it clear that you have disadvantages, they aren't as apparent as your abilities.

I'm certainly not asking you to further clarify your problems, it's none of my flippin' business. (Really, don't.) It does surprise me too that you cannot work. Not that I intend to badger you about it. You just strike me as a capable fella is all.

Enjoy your trip.
Thank you grimwerk for the compliments and well wishes, and for writing in a calm manner. It makes responding a lot easier for me. Rather than talk about my problems, I will clarify a couple of things about Australia's welfare system and entitlement to it. This information is current and taken from The Department of Human Services.

"You may receive Disability Support Pension if you:

are aged between 16 years of age and Age Pension age
meet the residence requirements
meet the income and assets tests for your situation

and

are permanently blind, or
are assessed as having a physical, intellectual or psychiatric impairment

and

are unable to work, or be retrained for work, for 15 hours or more per week at or above the relevant minimum wage within the next 2 years because of your impairment

and

have actively participated in, or completed a Program of Support if required

To assess your eligibility for Disability Support Pension, we usually need a report from your doctor or specialist about your disability, injury or illness. You may also need to have a Job Capacity Assessment. This helps us determine whether you can work, how much work you can do, and how much help you need to find and keep a job."

Being on the DSP for many does not mean one cannot work but rather that one's capacity to work is limited, depending upon the nature of the disability and the impairment rating. The figure of 15 hours per week noted above has changed many times with various governments, varying from 12 to 30 from memory.

You commented on my recent photos. I will share a photo of how I looked one year ago when I resigned from my last job, and next to it a photo of how I looked when I undertook my 383km walk 10 years ago. I had a very understanding employer regarding my psychiatric issues(a rarity) and did casual gardening, landscaping and property maintenance work for her. When I work, I give it my all, and I when I realised that I could not complete the work that she required in the time-frame she required, I resigned. The pay was meagre but I enjoyed giving back to the community, even if it was to one old lady. I give what I can in whatever capacity I can and am truly thankful and fortunate to receive the DSP.

I hope to improve my health (I am currently studying an Advanced Diploma of Natural Therapies part-time) and get gardening and labouring work again whilst continuing my creative works. I have tried the orthodox medical path of healing and it has caused me more health issues than it has resolved. The photo below is result of my last serious attempt to stop smoking and being prescribed Varenicline (Champix/Chantix). This time I am choosing the natural way and am removing myself from those I love and others for the possible psychotic reactions, so that I may do no harm.

gunsynd: Another one,Who's being biased now?
avatar
Gilozard: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Telling you to calm down != being biased.
I believe gunsynd thinks that yourself and monkeydelarge and I are "friends". I may be wrong but I do not believe that we have had any interaction on these forums until this thread? My memory can fail me at times but we certainly haven't had any interaction via PM. Before this thread, monkeydelarge and I have indeed had a warm, loving and verbose friendship via PM. I'm sorry to break monkeydelarge's trust and privacy by posting this deeply personal message publicly. Here is the extent of the PM interaction between monkey and myself prior to this thread:

"You are welcome. :)" Jan. 16, 2015" was his reply when I thanked him for commenting on a thread.

Obviously if someone disagrees, it must relate to the nepotism I mentioned in my first post on this thread :P Thank you Gilozard for writing what you did; it shows a level of compassion and understanding that is rare from strangers. In this fast-paced world of resumes(how do I do that accent again? alt - something-or-other) and judgements made on physical appearance, brief interaction or words on a screen, rarely do people take the time to think that there is more than meets the eye.

This community has seen a whole bunch of crazy from me as well as seeing enough to get to know me on some level. You all get to see the part of me that I am able to share when I am able to; generally the more positive side. I have vanished for weeks and months on end. Only those closest to me unfortunately to experience the rest of it, and only myself gets to experience being me. It isn't easy but I am still here, and will keep on walking and talking til my last breath.

I joined this community shortly after attempting suicide. It has been a life-saver and many here have helped to encourage me to be more open, to share myself, and to pursue my creative works. Thank you <3

And you continue to put a smile on my face :) DISCRIMINATION! That's why they get their own button on the telephone. I'm going to organise a protest post-haste!

Ah my leonine mane, how I miss it! I cut my hair off as a sign of mourning in 2010 and swore to myself that I would only grow it long again when I found love again. For some strange reason, it is growing again :)

Original post updated with today's purchases. Due to flying on a small regional airline, I am limited to 15kg/33lbs checked baggage and can sneak a bit more on with a carry-on bag. I do not have scales here so have no idea how much my pack weighs. All food will be purchased at my destination. For the first 2-3 days I will be staying at the cheapest accommodation in town or sleeping under a tree if it isn't affordable or appropriate. I'm not sure if I can handle sleeping above a pub; it depends on how busy it is and funds are very limited after today's spending.

I cancelled my prior booking for a return flight, and it cost me $33 to cancel it, so I can rebook when I know I am returning. That darn number 33 keeps appearing everywhere as it always does when 'walking the talk'.

Time to get this other list of games together for Steam and Desura codes. I've been updating and editing the original post and the GOG giveaway list. I will edit this post to add Steam codes and will link it to the original post. This list will be modified with additions and subtractions as I go through my accounts on various bundle sites and games are claimed. Any codes remaining will be dumped openly in this thread on the day before my departure (Saturday March 7th Australian Eastern Standard Time)

Steam Games [from my inventory]

Faerie Solitaire x4
Talisman Prologue
Talisman Digital Edition x3
Gearcrack Arena (purely for the soundtrack!)
Deadlight

[from Indie Gala]

Friday Special #10

A Valley Without Wind 1 and 2 Dual Pack x2
AI War: Fleet Command x2
Bionic Dues x2
Primal Fears
Shattered Haven
Skyward Collapse x2
Tales of Maj'Eyal x2
Tidalis
Volt x2
Wasn't Australia the country where everything tried to eat-/kill-/poison you? And you go camping? :D...
Well your list looks pretty exhaustive, I wouldn't even know what I would need. So be safe and have a nice trip.
Can't give you any advice except for Android games. I tend to play PC games on Android. Currently playing KOTOR and having fun with it, but it needs a reasonably powerful tablet (playing it on my old Nexus 7 2012 was annoying). Other games:

Baldur's Gate 1,2
Icewind Dale
Shadowrun Returns
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Final Fantasy 1-6
The Banner Saga
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

(Of these I own BG2, SRR and FF4.)

There are also quite a few adventure games on Android, and many that can be played through SCUMMVM or AGS.
I can't judge how isolated the place you're going is but in any case for Android Apps I would recommend you Nokia's HERE maps and suggest you to download the whole area you're camping. You're probably very well accustomed to compass-less orientation and tracking your progress without a map, but you can take that just as a convenient back-up - it works in offline mode with pre-downloaded maps (you have to download it manually) and can show you your position, distance and direction to nearest city with the help of the phone/tablet build-in GPS and compass.
Btw can you please give some feedback on the "portable solar battery" performance and if you find it useful the link to it? Also can you give us some updates on your journey, with some photos, I bet there will be great opportunities for amazing sunsets/rises? You mentioned photobucket account for the photos?

Thank you for the suggestions :) How do you get PC games to run on Android (is there a version of Dosbox for Android?) and is it easy to set up? I have a very cheap tablet that I purchased from Aldi earlier this year as I wanted something bigger than my phone to surf the net on, write (I purchased a little keyboard as I loathe touchscreens), watch videos and read eBooks on. The specs for the tablet are as follows:

9″ 1024 x 600 TFT 5 point capacitive screen
Dual core 1.2GHz CPU
1GB DDR RAM
8GB internal memory
2MP Rear Camera with 0.2MP Front-facing camera
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS
Radios
2G/GSM: 850/900/1800/1900
3G/WCDMA: 850/2100
Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system
3000 mAh Polymer battery

I don't know what you are talking about? Perhaps an encounter with a funnel-web spider? :)

Thank you for the map suggestion. I will also be grabbing a copy of this map when I arrive in Eden. Here is the wiki entry on Eden.

The portable solar panel I purchased is tiny and cheap and only for emergencies. I can't find the link handy now but will link it when I do. I will certainly give feedback on it. The products my friend in Norway recommended were beyond my budget for this. Goal Zero was his recommendation.

I will update this thread and my PhotoBucket account as I can, with photos being stored under the folder 'Camp Eden'.

I just tried on my new (second hand) cargo shorts that I bought from an op shop for $3. Upon examining the pockets, I found a $2 coin in them - score! lol

The not-so-good news is that one of my cats doesn't appear to be happy with my impending camping trip, and has urinated all over my sleeping bag. Given the weather where I live, I will not have an opportunity to wash that smell out(cat urine is persistent!) and dry it in time before I leave. So that's $2 towards my new sleeping bag.

There's an Android version of Avadon that I can recommend (no DOSBoxing necessary, install & play). A 9" tablet screen will be big enough to play it properly.

Good luck and be safe, looking forward to your posts from the long walk.

Tarnicus: Thank you for the suggestions :) How do you get PC games to run on Android (is there a version of Dosbox for Android?)
I was mostly talking about PC games adapted to Android. I just buy the Android version. There's also DosBox (I have DosBox Turbo, which is well regarded, but there are other versions), SCUMMVM and AGS for when you really want native PC games on Android (I played The Blackwell Deception via AGS), but I find that games adapted to the tablet tend to be easier to control.

Your tablet will probably have problems with some games. 8GB of storage could also be an issue unless you have an additional SD card. Shadowrun Returns takes 1.7GB, BG2 is apparently 2.5GB (according to Beamdog's site), ...

Still, it has a rather big screen, so you could probably play RPG's pretty comfortably, as long as they're willing to work with that screen size. (Avadon: The Black Fortress should.)

Thank you both for your suggestions :) I've only got an old 4gb SD card and was planning on getting a larger one if I can find one cheap. I've been having a bit of a creative brain-storm for a non-writing project involving technology and survival which would tangentially tie in with my post-apocalyptic writing pursuits. This is very typical of me to have ideas like this at 2am :D I won't say more until after I complete this journey :)

Tarnicus: ...
Nice pics, Tarnicus. I was right about the friendly aspect.
I'd like to be in for a copy of Tales of Maj'Eyal ^__^

You're going to have to load lots of pics once you get back from your walkabout! ;D
I don't have anything to add in the packing department, as my real hiking days are way behind me :)

Anyways I wish you well and hope you find what you are looking for out there. Take care.
