I know from my experiences with Telltale Studios suddenly declaring bankruptcy that it is important to download all your games before they close shop.

That is what I did which is fortunate as even though the website still exists, I can no longer access my account at the Telltale website or open my library.

VampirLestat: And would we get notice on time, so we can do that?
avatar
timppu: Possibly, depending on circumstances. Both Desura and DotEmu gave time to download games, but then if martians invade, then it may be too late to download anything.
Not to mention the terms of use require GOG to give you 60 days notice so you can download your games.

That being said, I'm starting now. Just in case. Slightly over half my games and their English-language bonuses has come to 486 GB; I expect I'll end up at 1TB once everything is done.

The chance of GoG closing down for good anytime soon is slim. At the very least, other strong men will snap up the whole site and contents.

Agreed. But as others have said: what's the point of buying DRM free if you don't keep backups? I've kinda neglected to do so. Might as well make some backups now.

Well, not require, but they "try". That is good enough for me because it is common sense that in possible scenarios, such promise couldn't necessarily be fulfilled, no matter how much the (former) owners or staff or whatever of GOG wanted to.

Fair point. Mind, given how much "warning" they tend to give with delistings... Yes, I know it's outside their control, but it is still worrisome at times.

sanscript: 2. Was this hyped up, exaggerated fearmongering?
avatar
Ancient-Red-Dragon: No, I don't think it was. Is it not a fact that GOG has been consistently losing money over the past few quarters? Unless that is untrue, then planning for GOG's demise is not fear-mongering; it's just being wise and protecting one's investments.
Ref what RWarhall wrote. It's not uncommon to "bleed" some money. It's actually quite common that a business would "bleed" once in a while because there will always be turbulence in the economic marked.

The same thing happened to Tesla; so-called "articles" spoke of armageddon and "now the end is near" about a company that they wanted to fail, and there are ALWAYS people that instantly pick it up like rednecks with pitckforks and low attention span, and tries to hype up others with the same fearmongering bs.

Fearmongering: The action of deliberately arousing public fear or alarm about a particular issue, usually unsubstantiated.

Time changes, but the tune is always the same: it only creates fear and panic.

Linko64: Dude asked a question and he was downvoted. Then people wonder why you don't see many new users come here and interact. Come on now.
Thank you.

There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
Oscar Wilde

With the media, oblivion is death.

The whole point is to get people talking about whatever issue the dissemination wants to raise, with the aim of converting people to their point of view. If people ignore them, they can't attract advertising and pay their staff and electricity bills. Added bonus: becoming an opinion former will attract others who want their own pet projects to be promulgated with positive results.

Bad publicity is still better than no publicity ;)

I use a script to hide the negativity (rep included) on the forum but unfortunately some here (including GOG) care too much about the negative side. Too bad GOG don't see the utter uselessness and the abusive nature of still not removing it.

Especially when the media is acting as a bullhorn and not the direct target. "Look at these egregious execrable oiks!" they say, whilst popping corn to sell to everyone. Job done. :)

To be fair it's not quite that simple. It's truly nothing insidious on their behalf.

GOG or the bots that are downrepping?

Doesn't matter, it should have been removed a long time ago. Except in a sociological study you wouldn't need a feature like that. It would have made more sense if the they hid posts that get more than 10 downvotes but that's not the case here.

Upvoting however is a positive reinforcement.

DadJoke007: All these threads about the alleged financial troubles with GOG will give GOG financial troubles.
Videogame presstitutes.

They were at it again with THQ because they held a Q&A at some place called 8chan instead of themselves or reddit.

It would be more interesting to have a list stating who is giving the rep points.
