tinyE: I don't want to shop at Steam.

GOG is doing just fine.

And the Escapees DLCs are great! :D
^this. I shop here because its NOT steam. That means there isn't those steam features which put me off steam here, those being social gaming, achievements, drm, client etc. It seems like every other post nowadays is why isn't Gog steam, as if being a steam key retailer is the only ambition in life.

AlexZeusMercer: steam has near 7100 games and 6300 DLCs
Of which 6500 games and 6250 DLCs are complete and utter crap that shouldn't even be given away for free. Quantity doesn't equal quality...

gamesfreak64: Gamersgate also has loads of casual games like hidden object and othjher small time managment games, so you have to remove at least 1000 or more titles, because casual games cant be compared to real games.
Define "casual games" and "real games".
GOG is releasing new titles at a decent pace.
Sure it would be nice to have some more games from the big publishers but we don't need 3500 RPG maker games. Or 7000 indie "games" people only buy from bundles if they have card drops.
Quality over quantity.

I do think GOG should find a way to bring more games here from big-name publishers who continually seem to abandon their catalogs. However, as others have mentioned very importantly, Steam accepts far more games (including mediocre or plain garbage) than GOG, and Steam takes a very "off-hands" approach whereas GOG is involved with quality control, testing, tweaking, applying patches, etc. GOG will probably reach 3,500 games (assuming they stay in business) but it will take a while.

JMich: You are right. No way EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Disney, Paradox Interactive, Warner Bros, Stardock or any other of the big publishers would publish anything on a platform that doesn't have at least 10,000 titles.
Oh, wait...

Experiment513: Well it's been a while since we had a release from WB or Disney. Still waiting for the other adventure games from Lucas Arts. :-( I was hoping to be able to play the GOG-version of Monkey Island 3 this Christmas but that's not going to happen.
Woah, is this confirmed?! We're getting a Monkey Island 3?! Disney has caused Lucasarts to pull their head out of their butt and to focus on that companies real success story, the SCUMM games?! No offense to Star Wars but those games are the crown jewel of Lucasarts games.

I have a few games to suggest. I would like to see the Korean action RPG "Artcturus: The Curse and Loss Of Divinity" by Gravity. Yes, THAT Gravity, the Korean dev. behind Ragnorak Online. Additionally, how about the whole Softmax library, with the entire War Of the Genesis game series, including the cell phone game "The Supplementary Story"? Some of these games are hard to find, especially the early war games(don't know where to find them) and I would like to play them. Additionally, I'm sure there are some Korean and other Asian gamers who would like to play them as the games are quite well known there and popular due to their critical acclaim(read this last part in GameGO! Magazine).
Besides "War Of the Genesis", one of the spinoffs is "Tempest". The current Softmax catalog that may bear more familiarity to Westerners would be the Magna Carta series. The first title came out on PC, then PS2 and then XB 360. The last notable title from them is "Rhapsody Of Zephyr".
As part of this series of titles, GOG would especially seem fit given some of the artwork sold by them. The artwork came via first edition as well as bromides/artbook sold with illustrations by Hyung Tae Kim. All that product could see GOG including an immense amount of swag with each game almost comparable to the Witcher games.
Most of these games haven't been translated to English but I would easily buy them just in Korean.

Two more suggestions. There was a port of "Lair"(I THINK this is the name) which is one of Korea's earliest original RPG's given a big facelift for the Wiz(Gamepark console). The game already has an English translation and the graphical facelift MAY be a mod. I say that could be the case because the game has been out so long I suspect it has become Freeware/possibly Abandonware. It was a good game from what I remember playing(lost both in Korea). :-(

Lastly, how about Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth? Steam has gotten the Vita ports and I really think games from companies like NIS and Idea Factory belong here more than Steam. I think GOG's mentality more closely echoes that of small Japanese game developers like NIS, Idea Factory, Aquaplus, Nihon Falcom, SNK, etc.

PookaMustard: Define "casual games" and "real games".
thats easy

casual games are games for the casual/ocasional gamer
I bet there is an official explanation about these game types if we google .
fact is that a casualgame (bigfishgames who distributes games from sites like: alawar (these have some very good games) and many many others developers, are usally priced at 9.95 euro at most, sometimes 12,99 because its a collector edition with extra, frankly i dont spend more then max 9.99 euros on 1 casual game be it normal or CE version(retail cd/dvd ofcourse)

"Real' games are more like the best indie games around, like gog has, i own quite a lot of these indie games.
and ofcourse there's the big AAA games, i assume the old microsoft titles like ageof empires belong to AAA i paid pretty cash on it at time it got released, also EA title (command and conquer) baldurs gates, fallout , commando's , jagged alliance , etc etc all these games were pretty well priced back then at release between 49,99 guilders at least ranging to 139, guilders.

googled result on: what is a casual game

What is a casual game?

A casual game is a video game targeted at or used by a mass audience of casual gamers. Casual games can have any type of gameplay, and fit in any genre. They are typically distinguished by their simple rules and lack of commitment required in contrast to more complex hardcore games.
Casual game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casual_game
Thats basically it, theres more info available if you google for it.
I call it simply real games cause i refer to the games that set a standard in gaming and sold millions.
Like the few i mentioned above.

Or in short: every game/type of game has its own max. price customers are willing to pay for and able to.
This depends on the customer and can vary a lot cause every gamer has its own standards and prices he/she is willing to pay for, plus sometimes they are ready to pay more for DRM free games , be it digital or on retail cd/dvd disk.
Finally it also depends on what the game is about, i have 500 plus titles and none of these have the same price i was willing to pay for, each game is unique and has its set price i am able and willing to pay for, i can see that i a few minutes by watching a video and prefderably playing a demo(no rolling demos but playable demos)
So thats why sometime i instantly bought a game at list price because:

1) i already had it on cd but it wont work on new windows (thank you mickeysoft)
2) i like the game, and it looks and plays like previous game i own
Thats what decide if i buy someting and at what price.

i know these, i assume the 3d versions are among? personally i have not seen a remake in 3d of a game i had the original classic of , that i liked, my humble opinion is that 3d version mess the classic feeling up.
Finally, i wonder why there are so many games that use those weird line/vector drawn characters like invis inc has?
Is this because these vector can be scaled to any resolution without loss?
I favor the old style, not too pixellike, like the last batch of games seem to go 8 bit with ministeck graphics which 'hurt' my eyes because they are to crudeley drawn.

gamesfreak64:
Good! You compared them using the price. Oh my. But I'll let you know the problem. You have no FIXED DEFINITION of the word 'real games'. You said that real games are like AAA games, indie games and whatnot. The problem is that you said 'are more like X' and not 'they are X'. Which is why I asked the initial question to define them both. So that's one.

The second is, you're saying that the 'real games' set a standard in gaming and sells in millions. Now lemme talk about one of the casual games you already know, Bejewe- I mean the much inferior Candy Crush Saga. Well, it hasn't sold as in sold itself, but if we talk about installations and how much money was thrown on this game's IAPs, it'd be a long story. Not to mention that you can somehow attribute it to IAPs in games as well as the increased focus on casual games, and oh boy the sales it generates from those IAPs. By your logic, Candy Crush Saga is a 'real game' even if it is correctly labelled as a casual game.

I'll tell you your main problem with the whole 'real games' thingy: there is no such defined definition of the word that is used as a standard. There's no strict standards and sets of requirements to compare against any game to determine if its 'real'.

AlexZeusMercer: in order for other publishers to notice that gog is a good alternative and sign here and release their games
we need at least 3500 games here, well 1340 currently is not quite there yet
I don't care about the meaning of this thread (if it has one), I'm just curious about how you come up with that specific number, and the relation between that number and the influence on other the publishers to join GOG.

Thanks for reminding me. Telltale should be banned from touching any Lucasarts title unless Tim Schaefer has input on it, especially the art style, dialogue and voice acting choice.

who knows in time maybe gog.com will be a steam replacement and cut their monopoly
I believe I understand your sentiment, I stopped buying Humble/Weekly Bundles because as of late a disproportionally large amount of the offerings have been tied to Steam, Origin or Uplay. I refuse to pay for a game that I don't independently outright own. I'm not going to settle for this "Mother-may-I-stuff"...

Even a game in which I was very interested; Sword Coast Legends, I passed because it's tied to Steam. I was looking forward to a more modern version of Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, but it's not a consideration as long as it's tied to a proprietary client.

achievments is not yet implemented here for all games, not too mention multiplayer this is a big downside for purchases
I have no interest in achievements, they add nothing to the game play for me. It would be nice if developers would focus on debugging and including all announced features instead of wasting resources on "social aspects", especially those that don't improve gameplay.

^this. I shop here because its NOT steam. That means there isn't those steam features which put me off steam here, those being social gaming, achievements, drm, client etc. It seems like every other post nowadays is why isn't Gog steam, as if being a steam key retailer is the only ambition in life.
^THIS. I don't understand why anyone even considers doing business with any company that treats their customers as presumed potential thieves (and I don't mean just Steam or video games by this either; publishers, other retailers, music, movies, etc...).

I found out that this is no longer true. One can download the install files in any web browser. Then one can install the games without being online, one just needs to enter the serial numbers that are e-mailed to you just after purchase. I'm enjoying Panzer Corps!
There's many Slitherine and/or Matrix games that interest me, especially Fields of Glory and Panzer Corps; but with the way they tie down their games I won't consider it.

I make due with Panzer General series (I still have all of them on CD-ROM and there still is an active modding community) & Open General / Panzer General Forever / Panzer General X mods, many of the original campaigns have been recreated. Not to mention the many new scenarios & campaigns created. In fact I've heard that GOG uses some the files that were programmed by members of JP's Panzers Forum to help make the version of Panzer General sold here more compatible with newer versions of Windows. If this information is wrong anyone feel free to correct me.
