Gog allowing users to change their names is good but how will people know who the person was before ? unless in specific conditions like the person was in chat or some thread most people wont know who it is.

How about adding the feature that steam has ? people in steam can change their use name countless times but you can see their history of name changes. This way people will know for example

lacko1111 -> ne_zevarj -> Painted_Doll

now how many people knew that ?

I have a degree in Geology and an interest in Paleontology. I've always been intrigued with the coelacanth (which was spelled coelocanth in most of the texts when I was in university), a fish that was thought to be extinct up until the early 20th century. The idea that this fish was alive and well but thought to be nothing more than fossils for decades was fascinating to me, so I just chose that handle at random when signing on here.

Uh, me (among others), and I (well, we) explained this before.

Search for someone onsite or offsite (search actually works btw folks - just stop expecting corrcted results), then you will see the older username in the result as well as it works on QUOTES.
Secondly, names with punctuation do not work very well (in any) search - on site or offsite - just doesnt get picked up.
- Hence the TBBBBOB rule on the matter.

Realise you've been offline for a bit, but I have told you all this before as have others, so your surprise and demand... bit odd.

inabit!

Edit: to cut it short - if you have any PM history (or "chat" these days), then you will see the original name of the user in most cases. Another reason TBBBBOB is down as the message history is not 100% reapplied, but...

anyone made a wishlist for this?

also scammers and people who bought dubious "witcher 3 accounts" will abuse this.

SachyS

then your question is a bit pointless isnt it - people would either know from word of mouth / TBBBBOB type initiatives, or they wouldnt . pretty sure any regular forum member might have an idea abiut it and advertising this flaw wont help matters for anyone doing GAs either.

besides, who says people dont have a right to change their username as they require - can think of plentymore good users than "knwon scammers" that did so due to the "-" button hits from others for no reason.
granted, it can be abused, but quickly discovered (as recently seen).

now, wheres my measuring tape?

people have all the rights to change their usernames which is why gog allows it after verification, i am not asking gog to stop that , just a feature that shows previous name changes since there is a proper profile option now on gog and galaxy as well.

Yep. :)

Yes, although it's sadly much diminished from what it used to be about 25 years ago.

theres not as far as I know.
Secondly, that would break a bunch of laws.
thirdly, didnt you change your name?
fourthly didnt you just breach rule #2?

dont really care at any rate I can find who I need to and just sick of drama threads when listening in the first place to good advice can get much more done.

As you may know, I am not a great fan of waiting for GOG to implement things that we as a community can do for ourselves. GOG's priorities are very different from the community and frankly waiting for them to act on things is imho a waste of time.

Each GOG user has a user ID, which I am pretty sure does not change when a new name is assumed. You can see anyone's ID by, for example, right clicking their avatar and selecting "Inspect Element" (at least on Firefox and Chrome). A panel opens and a couple lines above the selected element one can read something like
<span... gog-user="31983491820">. That is the user ID.

All someone needs to do is write a small program that creates a database of ID-to-name (e.g. by scanning all the posts in the last, say, 100 threads). Then run this program once a day or once a week and identify changes.

I myself don't see a problem with people changing their names and the ne_zavarj to Painted_Doll rather obvious change (how many four-star Hungarians do we have, after all?) does not bother me in any way. I don't see anything nefarious about it.

If someone feels the need to out such name changes, the solution is simple, as I have outlined above. I for one prefer to offer people the sense of make-believe anonymity.
