Someone mind explaining what the inventory and leveling up system is?
avatar
Ganni1987: Forgive my ignorance but what does the level up and inventory system do on Steam? I haven't used the client in years so this is like Chinese for me.

Barefoot_Monkey: As you level up the maximum number of friends you're allowed to have in Steam increases. Also, at certain levels you get extra space to add widgets to your profile. Finally, every 10 levels your chance of receiving trading card booster packs increases slightly.

You level up by earning badges, which are mostly gained by collecting full sets of trading cards and "crafting" them.
Thanks for the explanation on the leveling up thing. Sounds stupid.

Next question I have is what is a profile widget?

Steam has things it calls "Showcases", which are blocks you can add to your profile to display something or other, depending on what type of showcase you picked. You can display 1 showcase on your profile for every 10 levels, and there are currently 11 types of showcases available at the moment:

Game Collector
Item Showcase
Items Up For Trade
Badge Collector
Favorite Game
Screenshot Showcase
Custom Info Box
Favorite Group
Workshop Showcase
Favorite Guide
Achievement Showcase

Destro: Which games on GOG "don't work fully" without Galaxy?
avatar
Pheace: oo oo, I know that one.

Wouldn't that be any game that uses Galaxy for multiplayer?
AFAIK, The only games that require Galaxy for online multiplayer are those that A.) otherwise would require Steam to fulfill the same role, or B.) originally made use of some other, now-defunct service. AvP Classic 2000 is a good example: if the devs hadn't altered the game to make use of Galaxy, there would no longer be online multiplayer. Given the choice between no online multiplayer, and client-based online multiplayer, I would choose the latter (and I neither play online, nor use Steam or Galaxy!).

Seems pointless, but I'm that way with most things social media related. I guess if you're younger and into that sort of thing, it's pretty cool. Pretty funny that Steam is able to get people to pay for the privilege though.

Enebias: I'd rather avoid any kind of "metagaming", as it tends to draw the worst out of people and to degenerate in obsessions. I know of many people who stopped enjoying their games because their psyche just forced them to unlock every possible achievement and gain levels and medals; that way, videogaming becomes just another form of office work, imo.
Great point.

These systems are psychologically designed to wear on you over time so that eventually you break down and spend a bit of money which degrades the experience of having a client in the first place. Features that build communities and cooperation instead of sales should be encouraged. Mod support would be just one example. Ultimately this would help sales indirectly as well but at least would provide real value to a player's experience instead of attempting to incite an artificial desire.
