interesting story:
I've lived where I currently live for almost 9 years, I go for walks around here ALL of the time, particularly down one road that is the least travelled and has the nicest scenery. I pass a farm on the walk, and had walked through a throughroad on the property a couple times some years ago. I've walked past the farm probably thousands of times at this point. About 8 months ago, a sign appeared at the end of the "driveway" that leads up to the farm/property, giving the farm a name. I'll refrain from telling the name so I can't be 'located' - for a while I wasn't even sure the farm was worked / had anyone living there, but then over the past couple years I've noticed some fencing being put around the property, and some corn being grown which had never been grown there before.
I am vehemently opposed to GM crops, and the joy of walking by was sapped a little when I had no idea if they were growing GM corn or not (the issue directly being if it is GM it means they spray it with horrible pesticides and I am walking by it and that is NOT OKAY.) I was walking that way less, during the summer at least.
I'm a friendly person. If I'm walking and a car goes by and the person is making eye contact, I smile, nod, wave, etc. For a couple years at least I've been seeing the same truck coming or going down the road on occassion and we'd established a nice friendly repoire when passing each other.
A few months ago I saw a recommendation for a page on facebook for THE NAME OF THE FARM! I was like "ohgreat! I can look at their page and find out about them, what they do, what their growing practices are, etc." - It turns out they are a livestock farm and they raise cattle, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pigs, and they grow a good portion of their own food to make into feed for the livestock - I checked the page and for some reason couldn't find the information I was looking for (I later found it) - so I PMed the administrator asking their practices, if they feed their livestock organic, if the cows are 100% grassfed or just grass finished, etc. She responded immediately and I found out that they are organic, humanely raised, and are doing everything the right way. She also tells me they have farmstore hours on saturdays and that I should come by and check it out/meet them, and of course I'm all excited to do so. This was on a thursday, thursday night it snowed and some freezing rain.
I go for my standard walk come friday, and there is a guy at the bottom of the driveway cleaning it up and making it accessible so that when people come to the "store" (it's just some freezers in a barn) on saturday, they can get up the driveway. I walk up to him, introduce myself, he's like 'ohhey you're zach my wife JUST told me about messaging you' - pretty weird that after thousands of times walking by I've never seen this guy and now I see him the day after 'meeting' his wife online and the day before visiting their farm for the first time. They are the same age as I.
Saturday comes and it's snowy and muddy and I go to the farm to check it out. There's a few adults, and about 8 kids all under 5 running around. I introduce myself to the woman, say high to the man again, meet their kids, meet her dad, and they are all totally cool. Oh, and she is the person who has been in the truck all those times, hah! The 2 year old takes a liking to me and I ended up spending a couple hours just hanging around the farm mostly playing with the 2 year old (she had so many things to show her new friend!), and she loooves to play in the mud!
I've gone there several times now, to get meat and to hangout a little, the 2 year old and I get along really well. The 2nd time I went she recognized me immediately, got excited, and had more stuff to show me and took me around the farm and whatnot. It's really nice, I don't typically like kids because most of them are annoying little shits with terrible parents, but when there are kids I do like it's really refreshing to interact with them, and it'd been like 10 years since I had a young kid in my life that I bonded with.
