tinyE: I should point out that I have had cataracts twice. :D
TMI man, TMI.
Well, I didn't have problems because of long gaming sessions in front of the monitor so far.
There are much more other things which could damage the eyes (especially because today lights are much more intensive and artifical then back in the days).
And the thought of it...well, I've got a long lasting psychologic illness which makes my eyes hurt and my vision blurry by the only imagination that something happend to my eyes which is really awful.
Sometimes I wake up and I have severe eye pain and can't focus anymore.
The only hours I spend without the fear of losing my vision is when I'm playing pc games, so don't start saying pc gaming in front of the monitor damages eye sight :D
Okay, I have to admit, mostly I use a CRT monitor and a CRT TV (only have a CRT TV), and since I switched back to it, my eyes wouldn't be so red and irritated anymore...so maybe there's some truth to it.

If you're worried about the monitor keeping you up at night, you might want to try f.lux! It automatically dims the monitor at night!

timppu: Yeah I've seen some occasionally mention the "blue light" (aka HEV light, high-energy visible light) in this forum.
So... It's this HEV stuff that makes us blind? I guess that's a good explanation why we never got Half Life 3 (or Episode 3). Gordon Freeman's blind from heavy HEV station usage!
Try this, it's free: https://justgetflux.com/

Similar software exists for Linux as well although I forget the name. Basically these programs recalibrate the color temperature at the video card level, changing the wavelengths of light to mimic that of the sun all day long given the longitude and latitude. Reduces eye strain and helps with minimizing disruption to the circadian rhythm cycle.
Used to use f.lux as well, very good for reading, just don't forget to turn it off when working with colors ; )

I haven't tried linux version yet, will do tonight most probably.
Another linux alternative - Redshift
I used to hear stories about whacking off too much could cause blindness too.. I didn't believe it then nor now. I've herd staring into Tube TVs burn holes into your eyes too.. Didn't buy that nonsense then ether. I've been using CRTs and LCDs and I never needed glasses.. Eat your veggies like carrots and Have a lot of sex... Your good to go till your 40 80 100 if your lucky.

I find it hard to believe that gaming makes you go blind. Much like people say sitting too close to the TV makes you blind, or masturbation makes you go blind. I think it's just one of those things people say to get couch potatoes up and moving.

Now the brightness of the screen itself might be a problem, but I think it's only because so many people play in the dark. My eyes are so sensitive to it I can't even drive at night because of the headlights coming from the opposite direction literally blind me. If I play games or watch TV at night I keep a light on because all that light focused from a single point just hurts my eyes then gives me a headache. But If I keep an extra light source on, I have no problems.

Website above claims that sitting too close to a TV will NOT damage your vision, so really gaming shouldn't affect it either. Then again, they change what's good and what bad for you every year it seems. This year gluten is good, next year it's bad and so on. Each person is different and is affected differently by things. Improvise, adapt, and game on.

In this following article from 2010, it even claims gaming may be IMPROVING your vision and other brain functions.

BS
Reminds me of the BluBlocker Sunglasses phenomenon. Every few years or so another wave or fad of amber-tinted, blue-blocking glasses hits the market.

Probably a good idea to not have a brightly lit monitor if it causes you strain. Also consider changing the background to a color other than white.
Actually, I just use F.lux for my blue elimination needs. Saves me a buttload on piss tinted glasses, that's for sure.
Wait... That means.... No wanking AND no gaming anymore?!????!!!? o_________________________________O

So many gamers' reasons for living gone in the blink of an eye.
Gaming is the new masturbation
