So appearently Gamestop to begin selling and accepting trade ins of Retro games. But only in select stores which is around 250+ in New York and Birmingham.

I say hope thisa manages to expand globally. I got some PS2 games I like to trade in.
I'll stick to yard sales and pawn shops. I've built a huge NES collection that way and it didn't cost much.
It would be nice to have a large chain store selling retro games and equipment. At the same time you'll probably get better deals at thrift stores and yard sales, but they always have unpredictable stuff there, for better or worse.

trying to collect nes and snes games these days is madness outside of thrift stores and yard sales
they are so expensive its insane
you are better off buying a wii U and buying virtual console games its cheaper in the long run

I am more of an emulator guy. In my childhood I mostly played Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga games. Those are played best on an emulator these days I think.

I believe there are pretty good NES and SNES emulators out there. Very convenient.

very illegal too
a lot if not all of these games are still under copyright and i prefer to buy them just as i buy games on gog
and remain legal and a supporter of the industry and give a clear signal that yes i want these older games and yes i am willing to pay for them
which is why the wii U VC shop is such a good thing

thats true
and a lot cheaper
breath of fire II is 90 euro on the used market
its 8 euro on the wii U virtual console shop

Emulation isn't illegal, no matter how often Nintendo tries to spread this lie, they don't make the rules.
As long as you make the rom from your own cartridge with this for example you're on the safe side and I can imagine that in many countries it's not even illegal to load the roms from somewhere as long as you got the same version on cartridge.

Maybe illegal for NES, but for C64 and Amiga not so much. I bought Amiga Forever (http://www.amigaforever.com/ ) and the C64 Forever ( http://www.c64forever.com/ ) emulators so I have legal licensed ROMs and everything. And there is plenty of abondonware sites out there with legal downloads for these two gaming computers.

^ i know that
and i was aware of the retrode ...but not the 2 ( makes a note of that to get soon )
but a lot of people dont rip their own roms they just download them
and thats where things become iffy

i prefer to err on the side of caution and just not bother at all

and yes the pentium 2 is 18 years old too its also retro ! ;p

This is retro and one of the finest games ever made!
I still play it and need a human opponent again.
I have a ton of N64, PS1 and PS2, Gamecube, Original Xbox and Dreamcast games (I'd keep the Dreamcast stuff though).

And speaking of Retro, I hope you all know Retro Gamer Magazine. I have several in print. Really a trip back on memory lane. (http://www.retrogamer.net/)

I think I probably bought up the last of the PS2 games from Gamestop in 2013 (might have even asked advice about which "culturally significant" PS2 games to get here on gog). They had a dwindling stock even at that time that they hid in drawers behind the counter.
Surely it doesn't count as retro....
