If you are not averse to playing some older games then I would strongly recommend
Mechwarrior 3 and 4 (vengeance and mercenaries)
especially for their single player campaigns, and another I really enjoyed was
Mech Commander 2

edit : ah nevermind, I see you're already familiar with Mechwarrior 4 :P

It's not a mech game, but the gameplay is kinda similar and I hope that we see it on gog one day : Battlezone. I've no idea how difficult it would be to get it to work on modern systems though.

LesterKnight99: hawken is a first person mech rider, you should check it out!
I second this. Totally awesome online game and it's F2P. Not sure if it's a Steam exclusive, though.
Could anyone refresh my memory here. I think there was a mech game where you could also go on foot. You could jump out any time, run to another mech and hijack it. I think it was called G-Nome but I have no idea where to find a copy (it's an old game).

There was also Metal Marines for the SNES and that was a really nifty mech platform game were you could control different mechs as well at jump out the mech and jetjack around. All you really need to do is download an emulator and ROM for that one.
Gunmetal? - You pilot a jet that can transform into a mech
There's also Slave Zero on here - it's not technically a mech game because you're a big, autonomous AI robot but you still get to clomp around as a big, metal, bipedal, humanoid looking thing - like Shogo it's more of an FPS (or Third Person Shooter in this case) that a sim-feeling thing though

And if weren't just naming mech games whether they're available on DD sites or not I've got Iron Assault and EarthSiege series for ya...

1 of the mech game I liked was Metal Fatigue.
IIRC your mechs can salvage parts from fallen units (enemies or friendlies)
DOon't think you can get it now though

Does FEAR 2 count? You can enter and pilot the mechanical armored suits (with heavy weaponry). And in its DLC, right from the first stage you ride one of those awesome things...
Hawken on steam and Titanfall on origin.

They both have-

Polish of a triple A title.
Very balanced gameplay.
Overwhelming positive reviews.
Very addictive.
Far superior than any Mechwarrior game.
Awesome soundtrack.
Big and active community.
No glitches or bugs.
Hawken is free to play
Titanfall has many updates coming every few months which makes the game more interesting to play.

I really enjoyed Earthsiege 2 back in the day. Not sure how hard it would be to find a copy.

I think G-Nome you're right about G-Nome. You can still find a copy here:

As well as Mechwarrior 2, 3, and MechCommander:

The Empire Earth 1 expansion has mechs.
Supreme Commander 1/2 has mechs. An RTS type of game. It's called something else in Europe and Asia though.
If we're mentioning rts games with mechs, then I think that gog's latest rts addition has them at one point : Act of War. I seem to recall that the mission where you first used them was at an oil refinery in the desert or something.

edit: or perhaps they were powered exoskeletons
