morolf: I've now bought Call of Pripyat as well...couldn't wait for a sale :-) Am currently playing it. Good game, but feels very different from Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky, more focused on exploration and quests than on gunfights.
CoP also feels like a much safer game too and I think that hurt the game somewhat. Anomalies were easier to avoid and human enemies wouldn't attack you. For exploration, all you really needed weaponwise was a good shottie. I also found the environment in SoC to be more melancholic than CoP which added a lot of atmosphere to the game.

I am probably in the minority here but as much as I liked CoP, I felt SoC was the more immersive game. CS, I'll have to give another try, I only played through it once.
Quitted SanctuaryRPG after 5 hours. It was not quite what I expetìcted (a roguelike) and I didn't like what it turned out to be.

I agree, I've now done most of the 2nd map (getting my team ready to go to Pripyat), and so far it's been much easier than the two previous games. Some of the mutants like bloodsuckers are more dangerous, but the gunfights have been fairly easy and actually quite disappointing (fairly few against "real" human opponents actually, mostly it's zombies). Made me realize how good the intense and difficult combat of SoC and Clear Sky actually was. CoP is fun and interesting with the extended quest system...but I have to admit at times I find it a bit boring.
I'd also agree SoC has better atmosphere...if it didn't have some annoying gameplay issues (like weapons and armor degradation, but no possibility to repair them), it would be a perfect game. But even as it is, it's one of the most intense and unique gaming experiences I've had.

This was my second attempt at a playthrough. It's just...not very good. Character movement is janky, combat is like Risen 2's bad mechanics mixed with a poor man's Dark Souls, the lore is completely uninteresting. the voice acting is atrocious. I don't really have anything nice to say about it, unfortunately. I liked the Gothic games and Risen 1 but I guess after Risen 2 and now Elex I'm done with Piranha Bytes. I bought it at full price and it's the most disappointing full price video game purchase I've ever made.

They even made it a perma-death game, but it has a story and you have to follow it, so to die only means that you have to restart. Only common enemies and events are random-generated, and the events are just "you find a potato: what do you do?". So the whole "don't just run into combat, or you'll perma-die!" seems stupid to me, because there's nothing else to do, exept serving beer and do tiny stupid events.

Thanks - I've looked at that game a dozen times and had no idea what to make of it. I prefer RPG > roguelike, but the rest of that just sounds weird.

The good thing is that I bought it on sale for 0,79 cent, so 5 hours before getting bored are fine to me, my conscience is clear.

Darn, this one is just too hard for me. After 45' of gameplay I realized that I won't be able to finish the game regardless of time and effort invested. I wasn't even able to pass Jera, the first boss.

The art is interesting and it would be nice to turn difficulty down a bit just to enjoy the story and graphics, but there seems to be no such option here, so I'm saying goodbye to the game.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch)

Seriously. I'm the only person in the world apparently that just simply doesn't like it. I thought there must be something wrong with me, given the unanimous praise the game gets. But I've given it 20 hours or so and I still cannot find any enjoyment.
The biggest single issue is the rate of weapon wear. You can easily go into battle against a group and break several weapons, WTF are things made of in this Hyrule? Cardboard? Not since System Shock 2 have I felt a single game mechanic ruin a game so much (weapon wear and spawning in SS2). I'm forever going back searching for extra weapons because they break so much.
As well as this, the game just has no rewarding progression. Finish a quest and what do you get? Quite often nothing at all. Or if you're lucky you may just get a cardboard weapon that breaks in 5 swings. If you're lucky.
I kept playing it, thinking all those people praising it cannot be wrong. But finally I've just admitted the game isn't for me. Skyward Sword was awesome, Twilight Princess was pretty good. For me this one has gone backwards.

Oh yeah just an example of the stuff I hate in this game: I decided to do a quest involving eradicating a largish group of pretty tough monsters. I ran out of arrows first, plus a broken bow, then broke 2 Swords and finally had them down to the last enemy which I had to use a shit weapon against. Then, right as I'm fighting that last enemy, a cutscene pops up showing the beginning of a blood moon. Right in the middle of the fight! Then after the cutscene, all the enemies re-spawned, meaning I had to face going through the entire 20 minute ordeal again, with only a couple of crap weapons and no arrows. It was the straw that broke the Camels back.

I think I'll trade it for Xenoblade 2, play that, and then sell the Switch. Handheld gaming isn't really for me anyway and it's a woefully underpowered console when hooked up to a monitor or TV.

Well since someone mentioned Breath of the Wild...

I gave up completing the Master Trials in the first DLC (if quitting DLC counts). I died so many times just trying to get past the Beginning Trials.

Part of it is kind of my fault for doing a new playthrough on Master Mode, which made certain areas in this game downright miserable (Great Plateau, Eventide Island...which I really liked on Normal mode, and a few floors in the Master Trials) due to enemies have regenerating health and being one level above what's usually there (and the weapons aren't adjusted to match the enemies you face). Even when using a recipe to increase attack power for 30 minutes it takes a while to kill certain monsters.

I tried to power through it (got a pattern down on most of the beginning levels), but one floor just broke me (floor 10 to be specific). Mostly due to the leveled up Lizalfos that were in it (knock them into the water? Well, the run is over since they'll stay there and just spit water at you, and you might not have enough arrows to kill them), and since I'm on hard mode they take forever to kill (unless you abuse the stealth system to strike from behind) and recover some of their health if I take too long.

Maybe I'll try it again on Normal (if I decide to replay the game again later this year), but I didn't really have fun playing through this.
Myst. Didn't get very far and also game broke. I was trying to run it on Mint.

Not at all, actually. I really enjoyed AoE 3, despite its obvious similarities to the Civ franchise, but those games are up my alley to begin with, and I really enjoyed the battles, especially large multi-hero dungeons and sieges, along with the really big spells, etc.

It CAN slog and in some scenarios, your beginning grind can seem like a major endeavor, so I get that.

Hard West

I normally enjoy turn-based combat games, so I thought I would enjoy this one. However, this game just did not fit well with me for the following reasons:

- Uneven/unfair combat mechanics. Specifically: the enemy has an overwatch ability, but the player does not.
- Checkpoint saves only. (Oh how I loathe thee, checkpoint saves!) To be fair, there is a quicksave feature which is dubbed experimental (or similar term), I did not attempt it because I don't want to risk using a not-fully-implemented feature which may end up messing up the whole game at a later point.
- Mostly text-based choose-your-own-adventure type minigame between tactical battles where random choices have random effects. This just felt really out of place to me, and not at all enjoyable in my opinion.

In all fairness I did not progress very far before quitting, but I had had enough by that point anyway.
Yeah, I actually had to set this one aside myself, because while I want to like the Jagged Alliance similar combat system and other things, the cards were just boring af, and despite the short instances, those seemed fairly boring as well, especially when you have to mine/etc on top of it. It just seemed too busy.

Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures (FRUA) (GOG)

I enjoyed SSI’s gold box games back in the day, but I never got a chance to play this game so I was super-excited to give it try and play some new designs created by fans. I was primarily interested in playing conversions of classic AD&D modules.

For some strange reason GOG has the Mac version of this game running in DOSBox instead of Boxer, but I was able to transfer it over without any problems. I was also able to get “UAShell” running on my Mac (to play certain “hacked” modules) thanks to some very helpful posts by GOG Forum users here:

When I started playing the games I was pleasantly surprised at the updated & improved UI, compared to the early Gold Box games. However, I also quickly discovered another huge difference which was NOT present in the older Gold Box games: the lack of an ability to REST anywhere. This is a huge deal for me. In the old Gold Box games, you could REST (almost) anywhere, but with a chance to be disturbed by wandering monsters. In FRUA (or at least in the modules I attempted) the ability to REST seems to be restricted to very limited areas (eg only at the Inn in town). What this means is that I have to constantly slog back to town to heal and re-memorise spells, which for me is unfortunately a game-breaker :(. I tried a couple other modules, including one by a different author, but they all had this new feature. I then tried a conversion of the original “Pool of Radiance”, and although it did let me attempt to rest in some other areas (but not all the areas allowed by the original game), the encounter rate for random monsters while resting was ridiculously high, making RESTing there literally impossible.

And so it is with a heavy heart that I am going to put this game down. There are probably hundreds of modules made for this game by fans and available for download, do any of them allow the old “REST anywhere” feature? Unfortunately I don’t know, but none of the ones I have tried so far do so, and I don’t want to keep trying more modules only to be disappointed again. Although if anyone is familiar with this game and can point me to some modules which allow RESTing, I would be very grateful :)!!

Silver Tale (Match 3, P2W?)

This game is really two games in one - it's a fairly good match 3 game (with a puzzle challenge every 6 boards or so), paired with some sort of P2W crap, even though they've stripped out the actual cash.

You win prizes by logging in daily, and spinning the wheel in the casino, and by opening chests with keys...all of which takes resources, some that you gather just by completing (and then grinding, apparently) the boards. But that doesn't seem to be quite enough. I've aced every map on the first try, and yet I'm still running out of resources to keep my horse alive because I need some sort of token thing I don't have to spend resources I do have at the blacksmith who's going to smith me up a...hairbrush. Because my horse will eventually die without the hairbrush.

What?

It's telling me to log back in on day 2 for a new prize, even though I claimed the old prize yesterday calendar day, it's only been 23 hours, so it's not letting me claim today's prize yet.

And the puzzle boards are fairly creative and fun, but not "I want to do each of these 3-4 times to gather resources" fun, esp as there are around 200 of them total, apparently.

The core gameplay is kinda fun, but ruined by everything they tacked onto it.
