this has been going on since I disabled auto update which I don't want intruding. but when I update it doesn't efven have anything to click on. I get a "blue" update mesage but don't want to update it when I am pllaying later it says "version unknown" and no update. just greyed out "version unknown". this only happened with latest version of GOG, it was workgin fine before this!

Wait, what?

Are we talking about a game, Galaxy itself, or what?
More -> Manage Installation -> Verify/repair.
That should solve the problem.

It works but I found the reason this happened in the first place. I don't like to use "Galaxy" to install games, it crashes or locks up. so I download the installers via Galaxy, not the downloader and install offline then run Galaxy to have it "check" for udates. it used to but is no longer able to. I think "ill just get the update downloadbles when(and if) available and do that manually too from now on.
