Ever wonder why nobody makes free stuff that is good?

Well....they do! Now you may have heard of some games here. But were skeptical about malware or having them eat your pets while you slept. But worry not! They do!! No...wait....they don't.

Feel free to add to the list if you want. But this list is for quality. Demos or throw away bargain bin stuff not welcome.

These games can be run on most intel HD or low end amd CPUs. Free wont let you down! Remember to read their sites for bugs and see what each game is about. Search engines are your friend. So, no links?? Use google

A friendly shout out to StarTrail and the list compiled of free games here on GOG as follows:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_free_games_on_gog/page1

Though the games listed in my list can be found openly, any game on GOG requires an account to access.
But it is still a nice list so go check it out. Enjoy!

This is a good idea.
Thanks for this list. I'll install these on my brother's potato, so he'll be happy.

P.s. This Wolfenstein is a good one, I've played it myself.
Doubt you can comfortably play TDM on an intel built-in potato GPU.
Oops, I spilled an entire list.

Aren't there thousands of great free games that fit into that category?

Some of my all time favs:

The White Chamber - 2005 free adventure (Windows)

Warning Forever - minimalist endless Japanese Arcade game, easy to pick up, hard to master; to fill the 5-minute-gap.

A Game With A Kitty - in case you played Gato Roboto and need more up that alley

Peka Kana - more arcade nonsense chicken platform fun

SimuTrans and OpenTTD - complex transport sims, heavily modded with Linux ports

OpenOMF - Free remake of a classic game. Want to kick some robot butt? Here is your chance.

Wing Commander Saga - for fans of the original, relive the event of WC3 in a new campaign

The Babylon Project - must-have if you love Babylon 5 and wish to play through the Shadow War or even the Battle Of The Line

And (naturally) Arcomage. A fantasy card game with numerous free implementations, all of which are great fun if you need to scratch that "just one more round" itch; plus it runs on every potato out there.
So sort of a v3 of this? Had a good run, that thread, but been a while since it was forgotten it seems.

And I still really recommend The Spirit Engine 2.

There are lots of neat old school FPS games running on the ZDoom engine, although you might still need the original Doom wads for many. But IIRC, these two at least come with standalone executables:

The Adventures of Square
Harmony

There was also the free Chex Quest trilogy, although unfortunately it seems to have moved to Steam now (still free, but you need a Steam account first).

Some years ago i found a Quake Engine remake for windows GL. You still need the core game files but it is much smoother than it's Dos counterpart.

Not sure if this is the same one... But still looks promising

what about forum games on gog forums , ah its engine is so bad probably a potato pc cant open it :(
Mainly sharing some genuine quality free titles. I know people cannot be bother to sidt the mountain of crap. So those I liked best were placed. Probably more. Quest for Glory 2 and Kings Quest 3 got free remakes. Very polished.
As far as fan-made UPDATES go, I'd mention the HD sprites for the UQM aka Star Control 2
The original ones while well original are understandably terribly low-res, but the newer ones match the style well and I had much more fun playing with them. Actually it's hard for me to stomach the old ones. Need too much of smoothing which kills them anyway.
Spelunky Classic would fit on this list I think.
Maybe Another Metroid 2 Remake as well (100% fan made remake of Metroid 2, Nintendo took it down but you can get still get it if you look for it)
