phaolo: Aren't there too many X-Com style games lately? O_o
(not here, in general)
avatar
JMich: There are not. There are many games that are inspired by X-Com, but few reach the beauty the original was at its time.
XCOM:EU showed that there is a market for turn based tactical games on all platforms, so people are now trying to make the next big thing.
How about UFO style games? :P
UFO:AI looks good for a opensource game.
Yeah, well, if he does a good game I'll consider it, but I certainly won't be trusting this guy again in advance. They'll hear me laugh all around the globe if they launch another crowdfunded campaign.

Did they do something that makes them untrustworthy? Chaos Reborn had a somewhat lackluster singleplayer campaign, but the mechanics felt fine. I didn't follow the kickstarter campaign, though.

Two things. First, I backed them because the single player campaign was advertised on the very title of the project, and was severely disappointed on that front. Second, I'm still waiting for my GOG copy.
Big interview about the game here: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/06/14/phoenix-point-new-xcom-julian-gollop/

The mechanics and aesthetics inspired by the Fireaxis Xcom don't really appeal to me (especially the bits that remind me of the Xcom 2 'superhero' soldiers), but the new mechanics sound great if they get them to work - reactive enemies, unit sizes, faction conflicts, etc. Makes me wonder why they kickstarted Chaos Reborn first when this looks like more of an attention grabber.
It's due sometime in 2018.

Can't say I'm too familiar with GOG keys through kickstarter. Did you message them about it? Otherwise that is certainly odd.
I'm playing a lot of Chaos Reborn recently. It's very good and I welcome more games from this developer.

UFO:AI looks good for a opensource game.
UFO AI has a very few maps that repeat and repeat very often.
Aliens also like to stuck somewhere and you are spending a lot of turns by searching them on whole map (especially the ones with undergrounds).

I played all X-Com clones.
In my opinion the best current spiritual successor to classic X-Com is UFO Extraterrestrials Gold (not available on GOG).

Sure I did, in many ways to the same lack of response. At this point, I can only hope for Chaos Reborn to show up on the connect service.
Phoenix Point has started its fig-campaign with 500k as its goal. You can view it if you've pledged or invested before.

Pictures and scoop here.

tremere110: So the million-dollar question:

Will this be available on GoG?
Yes. If you to the Kickstarter site https://www.fig.co/campaigns/phoenix-point It is shown at the bottom of the screenshot screen and in the FAQ page.

However backers are currently only getting a steam version (plus other goodies).

Personally I would back this game (first time ever) if I knew it work on XP - highly unlikely though.
nvm

Sounds interesting, I only wish it used an isometric perspective, as I'm more into retro looking games. If it feels anything like good old X-Com UFO defense, though, that would be awesome! :)
It's funded now and we've got stretch goals.
Speaking about Julian Gollop's games - I wish we could have here on GOG Laser Squad: Nemezis (in Poland UFO: Gniew Boga [UFO: Anger of God].

Yeah, I know that it has little to do with XCOM/UFO series, it's rather "re-made" original Laser Squad, but man, it's so entertaining game. Even this weird mix of turns and real time (both sides are giving orders in turns, then in real time it's execute), which I'm not a big fan, is working surprisingly fine.

About Phoenix Point - well, I'm quite neutral at this point, but it's cool that they're planning to made those other human factions.
