Hi,

I started this thread with the idea to promote the addition of a new baseball game on GOG (see below) but then it just stroke me that we were really in lack of good old sports games on GOG.

Since I'm not willing to start GOSG.com and the people at GOG are doing at pretty good job at bringing us old games, I think it would be nice that all sports games lover say a little word here to let GOG know that there is a market for those (at least I hope so :) ).

Below, the original post:
---------------------------------
Although I already have way too many games on GOG, I really feel that one genre which is currently under-represented is the sports games. I know that EA and 2K producing most of the new sport games on PC (when they make a PC version, that is) and licensing issues may get in the way but this one might be a good contender for next sport game on GOG:

Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings

Any links to other sport games in the wishlist are welcome.

Edit: promoting the support for more sports games on GOG ;)

Good call on that one, I'd love it if GOG embraced sports games. Unfortunately I don't think GOG's current customer base is really all that much into sports games, just on intuition based on top sellers, wishlist votes and from time spent in the forums.

Super Mega Baseball is a good, fairly accessible baseball game, but not really a game I think people would enjoy without already enjoying the sport. I feel like a game like Hot Shots Golf or something along those lines might appeal more to non-sport-loving gamers and be a good entryway game. There are also some classics like the Hardball series that I'd also love to see be made available again -- but I think that's a niche within a niche within a niche.

Hardball, completely forgot about those but I can't remember how many hours I spent on this one.

For something a little bit more arcadey and old, we can also go for the Cinemaware TV Sport serie:

Or some old tennis games:

We do have the Sensible Soccer games if they count :P And VR Soccer '96...
The problem with most sports games is that they are only relevant in the year they are released. Whilst the engine of FIFA 06 is playable, none of the league tables/players etc. make much sense 9 years on. Personally I wouldn't have any interest in buying them - just check out charity shops which all have piles of these games.

I think that the greatest soccer game of all time (next to the Amiga version of Kick Off 2) may count ;)
Great thread and a big vote.

On a side note, if anyone here wants to talk sports, I'm always around and desperate. :P

ps. Am I the only one who as a kid worshiped "Base Wars"? It was baseball with robots. I tried the rom the other day and no, it hasn't aged well, but when I was young I'd sit around and play that damn thing all night and day.

Never played but never had a NES so it did not help.

However I remember spending countless hours on these two games on my C64:

Star League Baseball
Match Point

I have a vague recollection of the cover art for Base Wars from days browsing the NES section at my local VHS rental shop, but I don't remember ever having played it. I did play a ton of Baseball Simulator 1.000 though, that game was crazy awesome with the wacky powerups and stuff.

I agree with when you say the sports genre is under-represented here on GOG.
I just want to add another game to your list of sugestions. It's 4D Boxing by DSI/Mindscape.
A game I remember playing a lot, together with a friend of mine when I was younger.

I don't like serious realistic sports games and the FIFA/NBA/NFL/NHL etc variety bores me to death plus I don't know the rules to those sports anyway. But I definitely enjoy the goofy old sports games like Ski or Die (snowball fights!) and 4D Sports Driving aka Stunts, my favorite racing game of all times because you can build your own wacky tracks with loopings and whatnot. P.O.D. is also great for people like me who don't take any drugs but still want to trip and that game certainly qualifies.

Your proposals have been added (I did not add P.O.D. since it's already available but a nice one on which I spent many hours just after I bought my 3DFX) to the list.

I personally like both kind of games although I have a small preference for the more arcadey ones.

Sid Meier's SimGolf

Should appeal to a wide demographic, not encumbered by any licensing issues (as far as I can tell).

Never played that one but it looks like one of the last Maxis games I may be interested in. I hope I'll be able to give it a try via GOG one day.

Personal message:
Come on EA, you're even not selling it on Origin - which I won't use but that's not the point - because "it's too old" as stated by one of your Community Managers. I don't know if you've heard about it but there is a new guy in town which would be happy to sell old games like SimCity, Dungeon Keeper or Magic Carpet ;)
