A $30 came that's never going on sale?

That's pretty much my interest in it killed then. While I have heard good things about it there are many far more exciting games I would spend that money on if I was going to.

I imagine they will soon change their minds about the sale thing though once sales and interest dry up, particularly if the high price puts people off (as I imagine it will).

Yeah. The "never, NEVEEEEEEER" actually made me giggle. Especially on GOG, where "never" may mean longer than in twitterland.
Higher base price and no sale prices hopefully means that there will be a bunch of free content updates over the years. If there's paid DLC on top of their pricing plan, then I think I'll pass.

Whilst there isn't any hard and fast information on this I picked up on:
https://forums.factorio.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=678&sid=00fbf5cf873887a844ae6074d75336ae&start=440
Which has a post by klonan talking about possible dlc or maybe free update, so it's not outside the borders of reason.
Well at least they are being transparent about it, and not doing something shitty...

Like... developing a DLC and selling it full price while the base game still had bugs and is still in early access...

And now you've gone and given gog ideas for its next round of releases...
For me, if asking for $30 price then the game itself must me truly amazing and this game is rather not at this level.

hedwards: That alone makes me not want to buy the game. It takes huge balls to increase the price that much on a game that isn't even a 1.0 release.

first line in the news post. the price increase is due to it leaving early access.
If the developers don't understand the difference between alpha, beta and RC releases, then it's not exactly a good sign about how they view the customers.

A price change is understandable, but doing it _before_ the final release and of this size doesn't make me want to give them any money at all. It smacks of greed. Finish the release and then increase the price if you're going to.

timppu: It is admirable if they have principles (like not going to sales), but I still don't feel like paying 20€ for a genre that normally isn't among my favorite ones.

I am not surprised of the price increase, haven't this happened with some other games as well which exit the in-dev status and become real games?

I kinda like the no-sales approach as many publishers seem to push the default price so high because they expect most will buy only on sales anyway. And I presume the default price of Factorio may come down at some point as well.

Anyway, it is just one game. It is fine if I never buy it. We will see about that.
Ganes that are in development almost always come at a discount while in development because of the bugs and the incomplete nature of the game.

I personally take exception to the timing. If they're that close to having a final release, why not just wait until that comes out to increase the price?

Also, never going on sale is not something that I respect. Perhaps, not doing a massive 80% off deal the first year, but having it be that expensive and not doing any sort of sales isn't something that's going to lead me to buy their product and it's not a sound business strategy either. Those sale prices get a lot of people off the fence to buy the product that were not quite there.

Giving it about 15 minutes of time for the demo so far, it's Minecraft in 2D; While Terraria is vertical (X & Z) this is flat (X & Y). But i'll have to see as i give it more of a try later.

I say $30 for it's first year, $20 for it's second, and $10 for it's third and on would be fine. Although for some reason $8.99 really sounds like it's final price a few years down the line.

I certainly hope it goes on discount at least enough to give you a $20 during release week (33%), making effectively no price change during it's launch; Afterwards it can go to $30 til it's on sale again or they decide to lower the price.

But meh, that's just my logic.

I don't share the sentiment regarding Factorio, but it's spot on for me on Shovel Knight for exemple and their disdain for deeper sales. Might take several years to reach a sale price i'm confortable paying.
It even surprises me further how it managed to surpass 2 million sales, guess that's diferent tastes in gaming.

2 million in sales? Assuming you have the $20 early access and 30% is lost (2M * 20 * 0.7) that's about 28 Million dollars.

Pretty decent budget...Although i'd figure at least 1/2 of that will go towards developing their next title and not this one, so even $10M would do well for a small in-house studio...

Only if they would pay attention to the forums and I'm sure you know my opinion about that.....

the sales numbers are regarding Shovel Knight not factorio. But there are some news that Factorio did break 1 million sales some months ago.

not sure what you mean. The game is finished now, it is leaving alpha, beta, early access, whatever-you-want-to-call-it, which is why the the price hike. The next update is version 1.0.
Hmm, i have heard good things about the game and would like to try it but it doesn't look worth anywhere near 30$ to me, oh well i only had a mild interest in it and might just as well wait until it's below 10$ even if it takes years.

For now there's more interesting games on the horizon.
