You guys keep wondering about a Steam killer.... this is probably the closest thing to that. Epic Games is opening a store front and giving most of the profit to the developers. If this doesn't hurt Steam than nothing can.

i wish companies would stop making new storefronts, its so annoying imo. I just wanna have gog/steam/independent storefronts as the options, no stupid extra layer like uplay or *shudder* origin or now epic games thing.

Just let me download my games without your dumbass front end!
Just what the world needs: more (very likely DRMed) storefronts that can't compete with Steam. =P I doubt the Fortnite kiddies will care either way.
I doubt it will hurt Steam that much, but anyway, that's just fighting fire with fire. Not much good will come out of it from the POV of the customers.

Likely don't know/care what DRM even is lol

Best we can hope for is that it doesn't require always online drm, like what many blizzard products have transitioned to :(
I wish ms still had epic making gears of war. they're really ham-fisting the story with cringy kait.
That's strange, I could have sword Epic had had its own store for several years. I seem to remember a giveaway of Shadow Complex to get people to download their launcher.

I think the news is that they plan to open their store for other publishers?

From the linked article:
Epic also said it will not institute any required DRM on games sold through the store.

Basically it seems like Steam in that both allow the use of DRM with the difference that Epic doesn't offer one of their own, there's no "Epicworks" DRM.

Ah, gotcha. The article makes it sound like it didn't exist at all before, but yes opening it up to other publishers is significant.
this is going to be epic

And maybe it will be a different, more professional store? Looks like right now they're selling their own games through their website but don't really have a proper store like Steam or GOG, where you can put stuff in the cart, browse various categories etc.

Well, it could mean that they will sell a couple of DRM-free games. It could also mean that more and more companies will slap their own DRM on the games which will probably be a worse kind than Steamworks. Or it could mean that the store will stay less interesting to some publishers compared to Steam and that it won't be able to be a huge competition to Steam that way. Of course I'm hoping for the DRM-free games, but the other two possibilities seem more likely to me, so it's certainly not bad, but not necessarily a good thing either.

Considering the market space Epic has i'd say its likely their service will become the go-to platform for child(ish) friendly games, with maybe their intent to be something like the Nintendo of PC family friendly games that anyone can enjoy, which means I highly doubt they'll get much support from people already deep into pc gaming. I mean, if your child already has fortnite and therefore the epic games store, why install steam when there are games that fit their age demographic on the same platform?

Could be a good move for them, but just like any store, selection is key. If they have a bad selection no doubt it'll fail.

The best customer base: Children with access to credit cards. :D
