New game, same story: Victor Vran requires an internet connection to redeem the GOG 'bonus' key. Users also report you have to log in again once the game is started.
Bluetext Konrad:
You'll be able to enter the key after you start your SP campaign, you should see a menu option for it in game. The key is a one-time-use deal, so you do have to be logged in to your GOG.com account to redeem it.
That wording was a bit unfortunate on our part, my apologies - we'll update the post with more details.
user Randoo:
So it's a drmed one time bonus ?
Ok ..
btw, you have to log in once again in the game even when starting the game from galaxy.
What is up with GOG lately? I'd really hate to have to start buying games elsewhere, but if I can't trust that GOG games will be DRM-free than I won't bother sticking around.

Yeah, if they stick to keeping that Vran GOG drm shit I think that's it from me. I have no intent on spending a penny to GOG if it's gonna act that way. There's one reason that kept me here, and that reason no longer stands it seems.

Well, we've all seen the direction this train is going in, so that shouldn't be news to anyone by now. They will have to sneak in exceptions to their DRM-free policy in this way for the change to be innocuous enough; I don't think they're quite at the point where they can take the hit to the wallet if the old guard all leave, but considering just how many apologists we have even on the forums, it won't be too long before this type of thing is common behavior for GOG games. The new people coming in from Steam and other clients don't care and with enough revenue from people who don't have strong feelings on DRM, GOG is going to opt to increase their bottom line rather than stand by some ideal.

GOG will have a much harder time as a Steamlike without distinguishing features like DRM-free. They already sacrificed the flat-price differentiatior, there's not much left besides DRM-free as big marketing points. Maybe they can market their curated collection, but that's a very minor selling point - more people would rather have games available to pick from than not.
A GOG Steamlike will lose the ability to compete on features, and they can't compete on price. They'll go under sooner or later.

Believe it or not, there was a side-discussion about fallout on steam.
Indeed, my response to that is what you decided to nitpick. So therefore, I would encourage you to be less eager to nitpick before establishing context.
It's possible to have limited success in a market by simply being the second best.
However, I certainly am losing my interest in bothering to wait for games to release on GOG on these two points:
* "DRM free" that isn't taken seriously enough to explain what happened when it isn't
* Downloader that was a bit clunky but worked being End of Lifed for Galaxy that does lots of unwanted things and doesn't even work right

Eh, I agree overall that no differentiation is a bad strategy, but I am relatively unconvinced that they can't have similar prices to Steam. Steam has an extremely cushy profit margin overall, and I think that therefore, general Steam prices can be matched. Though I think matching their profitability from discounting practices will be difficult to match. It's possible to have limited success in a market by simply being the second best.

There is indeed a discussion going on about Fallout, Steam & DRM, but it takes place in another thread. Sure you didn’t get mixed up?
Once again, I don’t understand you. I feel like you’re assuming I’m following a discussion that I actually don’t know about…

You may be right, you may not be right. This is all pure speculation. One could even see it as a kind of conspiracy theory because so far GOG.com did stick to DRM free for the past five years. But let's see.Gede

Bumping this thread to say that I have asked for a refund. One month has gone by. No official word out. No Linux version upgraded.
Disappointed.

Ugh. I don't have the patience to explain once again how Victor Vran is in fact not DRM'd, but I will say that some people here jump the gun way too fast on everything.
So, about that DEFCON thing.... since we're going off-topic on a large scale might as well return to the actual discussion.

011284mm: You might want to send them another nudge. Has anyone heard if SirPrimalform has had a refund yet?
Just got back from a short holiday and I've still not heard anything back at all. So the last direct communication I have had from GOG on the matter is the ridiculous solution that caused me to create this thread. I replied to that message at the time and then again a week and a half ago, I feel that I may be being deliberately ignored...

It's an interesting turn of phrase that Hijack "doesn't have the patience to explain once again", since given the chance, he was never willing to support the position that Victor Vran did not have online-controlled features in the first place.
On the plus side, the "bonus code"is being reworked to be offline. On the minus side, the treasure hunts are not.
