DreamedArtist: I have this issue to actually... I just tried mine and says key is revoked, I know this game has DRM on it I think this is the only game on GOG that you need to activate it on the servers for it to work and if you cant you get stuck with the demo version of the game... I stop playing this game YEARS ago due to this and was never fixed, I might just DL A crack to fix this fucking issue once and for all....
Why don't you complain to GOG's tech support? I don't own the game so I can't directly complain, but I'm pretty disturbed that GOG is fine with this.

Grargar: Yup. In order to unlock the full version, you'll have to do all this stuff.
avatar
SirPrimalform: So this even affects single player? How and why is GOG allowing this blatant DRM?
avatar
Motterman: Gog cannot change this because the game is built like this by its creators.
avatar
SirPrimalform: It's no different from any other game with DRM. GOG may not be able to change it, but the developers could. The game shouldn't be here if its DRM is still active...

The solution would be to package it in a 'pre-activated' form. Maybe that's what GOG tried to do, but it would appear that they've failed.

Am I the only person who thinks this is a big problem?
...dont remember having this issue with the steam version... let me check!

It seems to prevent you from playing against more than one bot if you don't activate it. It seems to have had this issue ever since its release here.

Does steam need a CD code to activate like gog does? and if it does not can you play the game without it in the steam folder?? :O
Wow, a game with DRM on GoG. Didn`t know that. It`s totally possible to remove this kind of DRM by the developers. They didn`t, so that`s their fault and they shoulod be banned from GoG.
That it`s possible shows Torchlight. I own both, the boxed and the GoG version of the game. The boxed has to be activated via a key, the GoG version doesn`t have to be activated.

Sometimes you can actually run the game even with the steam api.dll in the folder on the desktop even with steam off, Try that might work I know some games like Batman ark am asylum does that.

I hope defcon works like that as well :(
yup - same issue with steam - and NO CD / Auth key to speak of...

my point is, it should be there to begin with. had the same thing with the humble version of tower of guns - pointed it out to the dev (as it was logging my playtime on steam as "unreal developers kit" - he made sure it got updated and removed the dll from the drm free version!

Man this blows :/ maybe some day I will find a proper patch or something to remove the key thing from the game to just enjoy it.. Damn drm ruins everything.
SOLUTION:

Restart computer - well, it works with the steam version (suddenly a different CD key popped up in the auth window).

I still find this unacceptable for GOG - even for a game that has a multiplayer focus (as it has a single player game version - shouldnt be ANY kind of auth for that!).

matercheif32:
While being here on GOG, I'd guess you're unlikely to want it, I DO have a spare of the game in my steam inventory should you wish to use it and get a refund for the DRM'd game from GOG. Steam version is no different, but at least you know the flavour of the beast,
No worries if not!

Edit: whoops! Sorry - its Uplink, not Defcon! - still yours if you want it though!

I think this depends where the game saves the key, many games (Two Worlds 1 and 2 come to mind), require a key which is automatically installed by the GOG installer.

If Defcon saves this key differently, there's nothing GOG can do.

People are so quick to cry DRM for almost every little nuisance these days. Look at it this way - you bought the game, you insert the key and done game is at your mercy, no internet required. No DRM there.
