Just have to say how let down I am by the crappy conversions.
Sure, the X series of games works awesome, but the others look like crap. I have the old cd versions of Rebellion and Galactic Battlegrounds, and they work far better (higher res, more stable) than the gog release. Not impressed. It's nice to get them digitally, but if they don't work, what's the point?
GOGs Battlegrounds works just as well as my hard disc version. The X Wing and Tie Fighter games work better than my hard disc copies. I haven't checked either KOTOR or Alliance or EAW, but I plan too and I'm not expecting too much trouble.

Maybe your computer is just a piece of shit? :P

Nah. They're just crappy conversions. And I did give props to the X series of games, Alliance and XvsT included.
Sorry, but some of these games need some major patches before I could consider them out of beta.
ANd Im running a modern rig, not the fastest, but why would I need a fast one to run something from 10 years ago?

No problems here with either of those titles. they work like a charm.. and judging by the consensus from reviews here and the forums... I think it may just be your configuration, hardware or otherwise.

From the little I tried Galactic Battlegrounds, I experienced absolutely no problem.

Ill try messing around with it and see what I come up with. The point?
I shouldn't have to mess around. And yes, there are problems, if you look in the actual forums for the games themselves.

Well there is one. The idea of a Jedi, or anyone, being able to convert a building is pretty stupid. :P
All I can suggest doing is "voting with your wallet". If you aren't happy with your purchases, decide how you want to proceed. That may mean not buying more old games here (but if you do decide that make sure you let GOG know why you are not purchasing here anymore).

Actually, now that you mention it.. I just started actually playing Rogue Squadron and I get erratic AI movement. Win98 compatibility hasn't worked for me... If someone finds a solution please post it. Still no problems with the other games yet (Rebellion and Galactic Battlegrounds).

EDIT: I found a solution for this: Set monitor refresh rate to 60Hz (previously 144 for me) and enable V-Sync in game.
Apparently, the problem was the high frame rate. This keeps it locked at 60 fps.

As GoG probably doesn't have access to the source code for these games, and many of them were released during the early days of 3D acceleration, I would expect some wonky behavior. It is however, encouraging that they are releasing any older games at all, and I hope they keep the ball rolling so the potential of this place as the last bastion of legal digital copies of older games is not wasted chasing after an ultimately fruitless dream of trying to compete with Steam, Gamersgate, Origin etc.

These are not "conversions", they are the original retail games, possibly with some additional workarounds to make them more compatible with modern PCs and Windows versions (like that you don't get odd colors in Windows 7).

I just tried both GOG games on my HP ProBook 6470b laptop, and both seem to work fine. Both were stable, and I saw no issues with either one, running them out of the box.

What do you mean by the retail versions having "higher res"? Galactic Battlegrounds gives three resolution options:
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024

I tried the first two, and both worked fine. The third one was greyed out for me, obviously because the native resolution of this laptop is 1600x900, ie. the vertical native resolution is lower than 1024. (900<1024). Maybe I'll try it later also on some higher res monitor, to make sure 1280x1024 works too, but I don't see any reason to suspect it wouldn't.

So what kind of resolutions does your retail version offer?

For Rebellion, I didn't find any options to change the resolution, also quickly checked the manual. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. What kind of resolution options did your retail version offer? EDIT: Reading the Rebellion forum, there is no option to change the resolution for either the retail nor GOG version, so it is stuck to 640x480. Hence, the retail version doesn't have a higher resolution than the GOG version.

Last but not least: did you try the retail versions on the same PC where you are running now the GOG versions? Just so that you are not mistaking some differences in your PC or monitor setup to be due to the game?

I shouldn't have to mess around.
Then you shouldn't be in PC gaming, but stick to consoles. PC gaming in its very heart expects you to be ready to tinker a bit, as there are so many different PC configurations with different drivers, Windows versions, hardware etc.

Regardless of that, these two GOG games worked flawlessly for me without any tinkering at all on this HP ProBook laptop, Maybe I'll check them also on my other PC, also the check the 1280x1024 resolution option (as that PCs native resolution is 1920x1080, which is enough to display 1280x1024).

Also, since you blabbed something odd about the retail versions having "higher resolutions", I am pretty sure you are just somehow confused. Don't worry, that can happen to the best of us.

I hope GOG does both, like they are doing now. :) I get just as excited for GOG releasing (good) oldies like these LucasArts games and remakes, or newer stuff like Blackguards games, Divinity Original Sin, The Witcher 3, King's Bounty series, Mount & Blade series etc.

It is not like those other sites aren't selling oldies as well nowadays, so GOG isn't the "last bastion" for them anyway. So where's that TRON 2.0...

There is stupid, there is problem and then there is a stupid problem. I would call this just stupid. :P
