Themken: I have been to special parties where this rotten fish is served with boiled potatoes and thin bread and served with plenty of beer and strong spirits to help it down.

Maxvorstadt: Surströmming?
We in Bavaria have some feud going on with northern Germans, we call them: "Preiss`n".
Yes, surströmming, fermented small herring.
avatar
Potzato: Ooops, I had to read it thrice before seeing it. Sorry.
So yes, it has to be a Bouillabaisse, which can be found in Lyon. But it really is not a Northern Dish, so not a Lille specialty.
Can happen, hence I replied and quoted ;)
What just throws me off, I have seen Bouillabaisse quite often , but it was only served in small portions, but in Lyon it was a quite big bowl and the cheff was saying, it was a local specialty ;)

And it was fucking brilliant!!! DI d I already mentioned it? ;)

micktiegs_8: Honestly, I have no clue. I'm so uninterested in my own country.

I will note that people are undeservedly snobbish. Doesn't matter what socioeconomic status they fit, or any other background criteria, their heads are so far up their damn asses. [tip of the iceberg, rant]

I hate my fellow Australians.
It's mutual with you.

Goodaltgamer: Or the salted fish in Portugal. You bake the fish in a salt crust, which will be removed afterwards! Greaaaaat!!!!
How did you find the Portuguese beer?
avatar
Themken: Yes, surströmming, fermented small herring.
Here we prefer our herring raw, either with or without finely sliced unions.

I guess most countries have 1 or more dishes that may disgust people not familiar with them.
Check for instance 1 of our favourite winter foods: http://www.etenzonder.nl/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/viewImage.jpg
It actually tastes good, even to those who haven't eaten it before. It's not just a soup, it's a complete meal.

Gede,

You mean translated water of life? ;) The ones I tried were quite good, sorry can't remember the names anymore. I do remember, they were all blond ones, normally I prefer the darker ones ;) They did go well for the dishes I enjoyed.

HertogJan,

that looks rather similar to a dish in Germany: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erbsensuppe

Look at the picture top right, not the one below and a dutch version exists as well of this page. By any chance a similar dish? ;) And yes a great meal!!!!!

Iit seems like the same dish. My German isn't too good, but it seems like the consistency might differ. Here we say it's only erwtensoep (or snert) if a wooden spoon can stand in without falling.

That sounds about riiiight ;)

And if I haven't forgotten all my dutch: erwten = Erbsen and soep = suppe ;) If you would have said the name earlier ;)

Edit:

The second picture is no good! It has be a soup with real pieces in it and thick!!!!

I heard a very funny story about that scene. Harrison Ford was supposed to shoot a quite lengthy fight scene, but was feeling ill. So he asked the director "can't I just shoot him?".

OK, moving on, here I'll introduce to you Portuguese Cowboys. Unlike their stick-fighters of the mountanous North, the Campino from Ribatejo lives on the plains in the centre of the country.

Bovines are part of a not so nice traditions such as bullfights, and adopt a quite distinct form in several regions of the country (actually, Portugal is very distinct from region to region, especially for such a small country). However, unlike spanish bullfights, the bull is not killed in the arena. I do not pity the idiots that get hurt.

The less violent part of Portuguese Bullfights is called the "pega" (grab, hold), and is performed by a group of people called the "forcados". Here are some samples and [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjQthiKfnng]several.

Gede: snip
Don't get me wrong ;)

If they really want to have a fight, why don't they fight against each other, bare-fisted and so on? (no rules no whatever ;) )

I do not understand this kind of fight at all. Yes it is better then the spanish version, that's for sure ;) But I don't understand why they have to use animals for it?

Reminds me of those idiots (seen it in several countries on the countryside), going out onto the fields with the bulls and are surprised if they get injured. And all in the name of showing some guts. For me, that is a sign of stupidity. You want to show some guts? There are better ways of proving this, join the fire brigade, man, they need guts!!!!!!

But thanks for the info anyway ;)

PS: ever heard of cow-tipping?
Here and in all the south of southamerica we share the infusion called mate with family and friends. It's like a law ^^. Pretty common and natural but if you come from a country far away and see people sharing the same metal straw maybe you think something like "these guys are crazy, this is disgusting, etc"

It is some old tradition that has lost its meaning in the modern days. There has been some activity towards banning it. I'd sign a petition towards that, even it that would mean that bulls would go extinct.
