Since Bethesda Game Studios has programmers for Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) hired it is easy for them to do.

Also I made a few Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) mods and with sets to navmeshes for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim it's not that hard to make NPC's not to be dumb.

Just like in Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity or any other game with NPC perma death, people only reload a save if their companions die anyway. This just eliminates that, No big deal, everyone touts perma death in games but very few actually abide by it.


I pretty much abide by it, and for that Wasteland 2 was very disappointing because I died when I set off a nuke at the citadel, and with perma death that is my Wasteland 2 experience over. That is how you live with choices you make in RPG.

Yeah, but in a way it didn't turn out that bad. I mean everyone has at least a "funny" story about them "Oh man! This one time, at band camp..." :)

It adds some unintended flavor to the game reminiscing, sort of like Ian stories from the first Fallout.

That is true, but then it goes back to hating them in the game haha.

Coelocanth: I guess the only silver lining is that their games are usually very moddable, so maybe this can be modded so that companions can die.

Hmm, by wanting the player to have choices, they seem to be going backwards with this. "Either have immortal companions or don't have any companions." Seems a bit of a weird "choice."

And not everyone gets into mods. Why can't we just expect game makers to make sensible choices? Saying "Oh, don't worry about it, modders will fix it" seems to remove an awful lot of the responsibility of game makers.

That said, it's true that many games did not/do not necessarily have true death, as someone mentioned. As long as your party leader survived, it would be possible to resurrect, or in some cases just rest or camp and then hey, everyone's back among the living. For me that only "works" if it fits into the game world. If it's your basic fantasy setting, sure, why not; if it's basically an FPS (or an FPS masquerading as an RPG) and nothing about it lends itself to resurrection being a viable idea, then not so much.
