While an optional feature, I did find the word "roguelike" in the description. I knew there was a catch.

Painted_Doll:
This does beg the question, though -- what is "roguelike-inspired?"

A roguelike is a game that was inspired by Rogue. So this is a game that was inspired by games inspired by Rogue? Second generation lack of novel ideas? It's almost impressive.

Open world and 'faster runs' sounds counter-intuitive to me. Has me wondering how long the average play-through lasts.

Sorry, I have misread.

yogsloth: Hmmmm, let me go through the checklist:

Shitty, low-effort pixel "retro" graphics. Check.
Procedurally generated levels. Check.
"Roguelike" permadeath. Check.

Congratulations, you've just become a GOG game!
I loled. It is a running gag at this point, isn't it?

Now, this may actually be a good game, but it does make you wonder why they keep releasing all these similar games, while rejecting others, in more uncommon genres.

Is there a huge demand for this type of game among GOG users?
high rated
This game is being developed by a single guy (hard-coded, not using Unity or any crappy game engine...). Keeping that in mind, it is logical that, unless the creator is an amazing artist, low-res pixelated graphics are a wise choice to save time and effort and still get a decent result. As for procedural level generation, it is just a matter of likes: it adds replayability and can save the developer some time when designing levels.
I have played some early builds and I find it quite enjoyable: a nice zeldalike/roguelike with the flavour of the old 8-bit consoles. Of course, not everyone will like this, so if you don't, save your money for something else, but stop complaining like old ladies. Some of us actually like this sort of stuff.
Hmmm, if that's true then this sounds really good.

Keeping an eye on it.

Very happy to see that this game is coming here. Can't wait to play it. Day one purchase for me.
This game looks like it could be pretty good. Not sure why the graphics are a problem for some people. A lot of great games (mostly arcade) with much lower resolutions have been made. Graphics never beat good gameplay. There have been a lot of really good text adventures, also. I suppose something like that would just be met with "tl;dr" or "OMFG! WALL OF TEXT!"

Those games weren't made in 2017, though. Their visual quality and style was primarily caused by technical limitations at the time, not because the designers wanted their games to look like that. More importantly though, those arcade games always had very crisp, clear graphics, which were easy to interpret. This game, on the other hand, doesn't just have very low-res graphics, they're also buried beneath several layers of modern effects. This makes for an inconsistent style, and also makes it harder to read the graphics.

I don't understand why so many Indie devs insist to insert fancy modern effects and filters in their so called "retro" games. If you decide to go retro, either do it right, or just use a modern, higher res graphics style. The devs of Shovel Knight went all out on the retro game design, and as far as I know it was very successful. So it's not like you need any of the modern eye candy to make such a game appealing.
This game and others have been dismissed because of how they look. I'll play anything that has good gameplay and replayability. Those are way more important to me. Have you never seen any games with really good graphics that sucked?

Not at all. Text doesn't give me a headache.
