I know the original text intro, with the spanish voice, by heart:
"Paris in the fall, the last months of the year, at the end of the millenium. The city holds many memories for me, of cafes, of music, of love, and of death".

They should bring back the original intro.

In spanish for me, of course. The voice of the actor, Tomás Rubio, is a classic; rough, dry, flat, ironical voice, gives a different personality to the character that in English.

DerBesserwisser: I may be mistaken, but I think he means "political correctness"
XD XD XD

You are right, I can't believe I misread that. Yeah, they are obviously making it more politically correct, Cecil is being pretty candid about it, so unfortunately for Marko, that's the idea.

RagenVadascovinich: KICKSTARTER ----> Broken Sword: Reforged - Collector's Edition (physical or digital)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/revolution-software/broken-sword-reforged-collectors-edition?ref=discovery_category_newest

"The Collector’s Edition Box will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One/Series X, with a choice of English, German and French. The game will offer voice acting in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian."
117 euro is a lot of money - but at least it contains everything that should be in a boxed version.
The last time (many years ago) I looked at physical releases, they were all mainly boxes of "toys".

NewPyk: You talking about that one texture they change, that even the fans of the original never knew existed?
Yes. And look what an absolute OUTRAGE it has caused!!! lol

Btw, I don't agree with some messages here saying that this game would be one step forward, two steps back. Why two steps back?? I've never played to first game of the Broken Sword series, I started with the 2nd, then played the 3rd and 4th. If I would like now to play the first game, it would make complete sense to me to play this Reforged edition (subject to good reviews of course). The original intro will be restored, and although there would be a few changes compared to the original, it seems they are minor enough to just don't care. Some people are truly overreacting.
I think it's better to make a remaster (or a remake) of BS 3 & 4 - these games have ugly design and low-poly 3D-graphics. It look disgusting on modern monitors...

But if the developers decide to update their games to 4K resolution, then let them update the 2nd part too (and maybe the 5th).

I am sure he does.
I think the Director's Cut was enough. I would prefer a 6th game. Is there a lack of imagination for a new story?

Correct, as I confirmed in my response above. :)
A fantastic adventure with graphics that are still convincing today. Aged very well and doesn't need a remake for my taste.

I suspect that a lot of gamers have a very large backlog, like myself, and to be honest I don't want to increase it with numerous remasters and remakes. I prioritize remakes that no longer work in the original (or are no longer available). That makes the most sense in my opinion.

In this specific case, I tend to agree that it's not a huge deal. Not because the changes are minor, however, but because I don't think they are going to make the originals unavailable. There is still a minor issue in that the originals are available only in english currently (unless I am misremembering), but at the very least they are still accessible. Having the original as it was greatly reduces the need for a faitfhful remaster, but I would personally still prefer if they had stuck with the original and just enhanced audio and graphics (perhaps with an option to toggle between "classic" and "remastered" experiences, if they so desire, but that would be more work).

As for the changes, changing the attitude of a secondary character is a significant tweak, I would say, and that's already been announced. Plus, they did cut several minor interactions with the Director's cut previously, and swapped the original intro with a different one, showing they aren't averse to sweeping changes.

Individually, these might not amount to much, but taken as a whole, the experience is perceivably different (at least enough for me to not use the Director's Cut outside of playing thorugh it once the first time around).

The Collector's Edition looks great, though, I really wanted a Broken Sword artbook, so I am really conflicted on whether not buying the game at all, or going straight for the 200+ euros version. XD XD XD

A remaster of the remake of a 28 year-old game to bring it closer to the original release, but not quite, using "ethically-trained" AI, adapted to modern western political sensibilities, though a £200 Kickstarter featuring a vinyl record and a slew of digital goodies?
It's 2024 alright.

First - you are reacting to our discussion about Tomb Raider remasters, not Broken sword, so you got that wrong.

Second - you just answered why you don´t understand the "one step forward, two steps back" by admitting "I've never played to first game of the Broken Sword series".

The DC edition was a mixed bag success (just look at almost any review on YT, you´ll understand why), because they decided to add new part of story, where you play as Nico (something which was revolutionary about the second game), but it was not well implemented, because in order for the rest of the story to make sense, without significantly changing it altogether, they decided she just decides not to continue her investigation, making the added part redundant and unnecessary.

Second reason - part of the charm of the first game was, that after you encountered her, you weren´t sure whether she just tries to play you or genuinely is on your side (femme fatale). By having that additional chapter, it´s painfully clear what side she´s on.

Plus they added head portraits, which is not bad by itself, but weren´t even talking, they were just static images.
I have yet to meet a person who played the DC version and didn´t said: "just play the original in SCUMMVM"

Charles Cecil already said they learned from this mistake and they will base the Reforged edition on the original game - but then he says in another interview about these politically correct changes which they wanna implement for no reason, when all the fans want is remastered version of original, unspoiled and untouched? - hence the one step forward, two steps back.

I'm not sure what exactly I got wrong here. I'm confused.

I didn't admit, I stated. There's nothing to hide.

Firstly, when the game is released, reviewers will judge whether these changes to the original will have a major impact on the game. As far as I can see it, these changes are minor enough to just not care about them. It seems to me, that this Reforged edition will be much closer to the original game then the DC edition was.

Secondly, you say these changes will be implemented "for no reason". I believe Charles Cecil clearly said at least for one of the upcoming changes that he was uncomfortable with that story element from the very beginning, even while making the original game.

Also, let's not forget that this is his game, and he has the right to change it, if it feels it's the right decision. I mean, I wrote a few essays and short stories myself in the past, going back decades. When I read them recently, at quite a few places, I was like "what the hell was I thinking writing that??" Some of the details made no sense, and for some other parts, I was just way too young to understand things, and was blind sided by assumptions, which seemed correct back then, but I know today that I assumed wrongly. So, from that aspect, I can relate to Charles Cecil's reasoning to implement these changes.

Again, reviewers will judge whether these changes are major enough or not for the story. But it seems to me, that a few people are prepared to "cancel" the game even before the release, just because of these changes. Same way as some people were ready to "cancel" the new Tomb Raider remastered games because of that texture.

Well how on earth can you evaluate if the new version would be a step back (or two for that matter) if you never played the first one at all? It's nothing to be ashamed of - sure - but you simply won't be able to judge it because you cannot compare you can just judge the new version for itself ... at least as long as you did not play the first one.

Why on earth would "reviewers" be able to tell me what I'd consider to have a major impact? They simnply can't. They might be able to tell that some technical changes did not affect the gameplay much but they absolutely can't tell if a change in a story or character would be a major impact for me. Some people don't have any problems with political correctness - I personally hate it with a passion and I would be really happy if it never happened in the first place. Yes, some things made in earlier times might offend some people ... but they are simply a testimony of their time. Broken Sword is not a game from 2024 and it never will be so let it stay the way it was because THAT is the way it became a classic. However ... a "reviewer" might tell me that the changes don't impact the story much ... does not change the fact for me that these changes are only made for reasons of political correctness and not wanting to offend certain people in 2024 ... so I absolutely WILL hate it for that alone and I will hope that it won't sell along with not supporting the game.

avatar
robaato.san: Secondly, you say these changes will be implemented "for no reason". I believe Charles Cecil clearly said at least for one of the upcoming changes that he was uncomfortable with that story element from the very beginning, even while making the original game.
Hmmm ... if that would really be the case - which I am sure is NOT the case - why didn't he change it in the DC ... or rather in the original game before release? Nobody forced him. This is just the usual 2024 interview in which devs now are trying to jump on the "offended" train saying that they were "always uncomfortable" ... and honestly I absolutely don't believe them. It is the same with E.T. and Spielberg stating that he always hated that the bad guys had weapons and he changed them to walkie talkies ... and he had to change it back in the end because it was ridiculous ... money thrown out of the window for these changes.

avatar
robaato.san: Also, let's not forget that this is his game, and he has the right to change it,
I agree with this one. It is his game and he has the right to change whatever he wants ... I have the right to not buy it. That's perfectly fine for me.

avatar
robaato.san: if it feels it's the right decision. I mean, I wrote a few essays and short stories myself in the past, going back decades. We are not talking about some sequences that did not make sense in the story. "He cites the examples of a Syrian carpet seller character, changed to be less “stereotypically mean" THAT is political correctness at its best. Let them be stereotypes ... nobody cared back then and it is a videogame and not a documentation.

avatar
robaato.san: Again, reviewers will judge whether these changes are major enough or not for the story.
No, CUSTOMERS will decide this.

avatar
robaato.san: But it seems to me, that a few people are prepared to "cancel" the game even before the release, just because of these changes. Same way as some people were ready to "cancel" the new Tomb Raider remastered games because of that texture.
I did not know about the censoring of the TR games, otherwise, yes, I would not have supported them. I was fine with the ridiculous and unnecessary one time disclaimer in which they stated that they decided not to censor TR just to do exactly that (and no, it does not matter how minor or major some censoring is - they stated that there is NO censoring which simply was a lie) ... however - since there was a patch made by the community to revert this censoreing I archived this patch along with the game now.

Btw: Not buying has nothing to do with "canceling" anything. As usual it is a matter of offer and demand and if the customer does not demand what he gets offered the game won't sell. Simply economics nothing more. Cater a product to your customers amd the game will sell. Changing a classic is always a risk and in most cases will end badly.
