An ancient evil has returned to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out. The fate of Faerun lies in your hands. Alone, you may resist. But together, you can overcome.

Larian Studios have just announced that they are developing and publishing Baldur’s Gate III. Created in close collaboration with the Dungeons & Dragons team at Wizards of the Coast, Baldur’s Gate III is based off current D&D mechanics and spells and is the official new chapter in the legendary series.

Baldur’s Gate III will push the boundaries of the RPG genre and offer a rich narrative with unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters and memorable combat. It is Larian Studios’ biggest production ever and will be playable together with friends or as a single-player adventure.

Prepare for the return of a malevolent presence to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out, corrupting everything that remains in the Forgotten Realms.

Alone you may resist, but together you can overcome. Gather your party.

Baldur’s Gate III Early Access coming to GOG.COM on October 6th!
Who plans on getting early access just to run through the character builder a couple dozen times? I plan on just making every character I can possibly conceive of and seeing what I actually like, and what I can and can't make. I know lots of gameplay stuff will change, but I imagine that the character creation changes will be largely cosmetic.
Going all out, or rather, "all in":

It's releasing a week later? Aww. :(
Yeah, I saw that in the newsletter. If there was one thing I would have removed from baldurs gate is the whole “relationship/love” crap.
I understand some people’s need for party and management of party, but if you want that get a visual novel or some porn or something.
It’s looking more and more like I am not going to like BG3 which is a same. Perhaps I will just play the original releases with big world, solo!

The audience that's playing mainly for the romance/relation-/companionship portion is just too big to ignore. Luckily you can always ignore it just as well, if you want to focus on the more relevant aspects.

Although it will be interesting to see if they manage to pull it off on the cinematical side of things without entering ultra-cringe Dragon Age: Inquisition territory, and especially when, in Baldur's Gate III's case, there's interracial intercourse (Halfling-on-non-Halfling action) involved.
As far as I am aware, it will be the first D&D-based CRPG that has been released in almost 10 years. For me, that means it at least deserves a chance and I will be willing to overlook minor quibbles about ruleset, canonical story arc, etc. If it doesn't sell well, it might be the last D&D video game we see.

My biggest quibble is that it doesn't seem it will support native Linux. Many developers seem to be going back on Linux support, sadly, including Larian and CDPR.

Do you think it will be as good as Planescape

Planescape: Torment? Tbh, I doubt the writing will be as good, based on what I've seen in D:OS1 (unless Larian has hired a bunch of new writers just for BG3). Although, we might be pleasantly surprised. I expect other aspects, such as the combat, may well be better and it will probably be a much larger game. I love the turn-based combat in D:OS and can't wait to see it implemented in a D&D game.

It would be cool if we could travel to Sigil as an Easter Egg.

Do you think the game will rrflect the spirit of the origins well enough

It would, although I doubt they would include an entire city as an easter egg. They might put in some references to Planescape somewhere.

I would love it if, after BG3, Larian made some RPGs using other D&D settings. Dark Sun, Ravenloft or Planescape would be amazing and insta-buys for me, if they were half-decent. We can dream ...

It depends what you consider the 'spirit of the origins'. I mean, many people considered that WotC pretty much f-ed up the whole Forgotten Realms setting with 4th edition. So, BG3 has to live with that baggage. But, from what I've seen in the youtube videos, it looks like Larian are doing their best to recreate that magic, within the constraints they have been given.

By spirit of the origins i meant the first BG games. Sorry, i am sick and not thinking clearly. I am ashamed of it, but i have never played tabletop RPG games

Planescape Torment is gritty and serious, though not withot humour. Meanwhile Baldur's Gate is kinda more straightforward in that there is a more clear distinction between good and evil ( i don't mean in alignment terms). In Planescape, there's almost no purely good characters. I hope that BG3 is more similar to BG1 and 2

It’s always cringe worthy. DA origins also suffered from it. NPCs are generally cringe worthy and only useful as human shields anyways, but “romance” is always done badly.

That's the charm of those games you are a hero and you are supposed to kill the bad guy

Well, third person and first person games are believed to sell better. Not without reason. If you have got a person whos never played video games, Witcher 3 or GTA V will be easier to get into than D&D games with tons of intricacies. Shooting pedestrians in GTA and running away from the police is easier than learning all about rolls, saving throws, armour class, THaC0 or whatever.

But technically in the last decade we have had Beamdog's Extended Editions
