New to gog - love it so far.

I've been brought back to my gaming roots because of a book I'm reading (and loving), and thought I'd pass it on because I imagine it's right up the average gog user's street...

It's called 'Ready Player One', and it's basically Willy Wonka in a dark 21st century. The Wonka figure is the head of a SecondLife type MMO in the year 2044 and when he dies he leaves his entire foreign to however can find a series of easter eggs hidden in the game. All of the clues relate to 80s culture. I'm loving the subtle references to Delorians, T1000s, Atari etc.

Seriously, I'd highly recommend it.

Anyone else read it?

I actually have it on my e-reader, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Picked it up because a friend highly recommended it.

That's the book Steven Spielberg is going to turn into a movie right?
Far out, I'm gonna have to check that out.

Oh and welcome to the forum MrHunter, if that is your real name! :P

Ordered it. I'm not one of those sophistos with a Kindle so I'll have to wait for the actual book to get here in the mail. :P

I've read it and highly recommend it. It's an awesome book. If you remember the 80s fondly, both in regards to gaming and pop culture in general, this book is for you.

Sadly, yes. I can't imagine that'll end up well.

Oh boy. I see no way how that could possibly go wrong.

What if I don't because I wasn't alive then. The book was recommended to me by a friend who wasn't either, though. At least not much.
Great book! I loved it! You will like it even more if you were a nerd in the 1980s.

Well, you can try, but the plot is pretty much built around references to various aspects of 80s pop culture. Games, movies, cartoons, TV shows, comics, you name it. I just know I found the references to be a big part of my connection with the book. If I hadn't understood any of the references, I don't know how well I would have liked the book. But hey, it's a book, books are for reading, and if you don't like the book you're reading, you just stop. So give it a whirl, you might enjoy it as much as I did.

No way?! I'd not heard that, but it's dying to be made into a film

Good move! Let me know what you think - if you're like me it'll inspire you to head straight to eBay to look for a Commodore 64.

Or I can just get my Colecovison out of the moth balls.
Somehow the plot reminds me of the Peter Molyneux fiasco. When he announced that the guy who managed to reach the center of that Curiosity Cube of his would win a "life-changing award".
The "life changing award" turned out to be the possibility of incarnating the supreme god in Godus.

Turns out that Godus was a giant fiasco and the poor kid is still waiting for his "life changing award" (that will probably never come).
Welcome to GOG!. That's an interesting book. :)
