How will I know if BigWorld is installed?

ShadowWalker56: How will I know if BigWorld is installed?
Its easier if you hit the reply, then the response gets highlighted. BigWorld is a tool. You run it like a normal program and point it towards both your BG1 and BG2 installs. Then you select a section - Basic, Tactics, Expert - each has different mods to install which change or add to the world in different ways, Tactics for instance makes the game harder. Then the software downloads all the required mods from the web (can take a loooong time, but it does save them so you can back them up and not have to download again) and installs them for you. What you end up with is a monster install of the BG games, plus 30gb of mods, all run through the BG2 engine.
Have a look at the documentation:

ShadowWalker56: So they can use mods. Good. What are the best ones? Isn't there supposed to be a mod that puts all the things back in the games that were deleted?

nightcraw1er.488: You are talking about this mod (Unfinished Business):
http://www.pocketplane.net/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=161&Itemid=114

Also, are you talking about the original BG1 + 2, or the "Enhanced" version. Personally, I would only recommend playing the original. Then you have several options:
Download all the files via browser (as I don't use Galaxy or Downloader) and save them somewhere - also back them up.
Install BG1 by clicking on the exe file
Install BG2 by clicking on the exe file

You can now do so much with these. As others have mention there is Tutu, and trilogy, they either copy the data files from BG1 or allow you to use the those resources so that you can play through the whole game in the BG2 engine - e.g bigger screen res and such like. This is fine, but you can also add any of the million mods out there to it, look at pocket plane link above or many others like sourcerors place/spellhold studios.

One final suggestion, and one I tend to go with is the Big World Setup:
http://www.shsforums.net/topic/44661-big-world-project-bwp-v90/

This is a small program which merges both games and uses the BG2 engine, but also adds 30gb of other mods in depending on your selection, you can have more tactics, more quests etc.

So its really up to wether you like to select and manage the mods you install, or let a program do it for you.

Oh, and once you are addicted, try soloing or poverty solo run!
I'm having a little trouble understanding how to install Big World. Would you mind tell me, step by step, how to set it up? I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Your best bet is to follow the specific instructions given by the developer in the download at:
http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/534-big-world-english/

Basically (from memory):
1) Install BG1 outside windows area, e.g. to C:\BG1
2) Install the official bugfix patch on BG1
3) Install BG2 outside windows area, e.g. to C:\BG2
4) Install the official bugfix patch on BG2
5) Install (or unpach) the downloaded BigWorld Setup program from here:
http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/536-big-world-installpack/
6) Install (or unpack) the FixPack here:
http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/521-big-world-fixpack/
7) Run the BigWorld Setup program. It will have some file locator boxes where you have to point it to the BG1 and BG2 installs.
8) Select the version which most fits your requirements, I would suggest Recomended for starter user, and Tactics for more advanced user.
9) Wait. It takes a long time as it contacts each of the mods webpages, downloads the mods.
10) Once it has all the mods (they are files stored in a directory so you can copy them out and keep for another time if you like), it then starts working on installing each mod, copying all the data from BG1 over.
11) Once it has finished (and on slow BB connection it could be several hours) you will be able to remove the BG1 install and just be left with the complete BG2 install, which you can run by the given shortcut.
