Here's my own favorites. I wanted to include Poltergeist, but realized that it doesn't really count, since it isn't really about any specific ghost, but more about random supernatural stuff.
A Chinese Ghost Story (1997)
Really trippy yarn taking place in ancient china. martial arts, stop-motion, freaky special effects, tragedy, romance, slapstick and shao-lin rap. There is a tiny bit of depth, with the shallow city life juxtaposed against nature and spirits. Slightly offtopic, perhaps.
Dark Water (2000)
The success of The Ring inspired the movie industry to create a horror movie based on a short story collection written by the guy who also wrote the book behind The Ring.
Ghost Story (1981)
Not so sure about this one, but I remember it as scary .. or one scene, at least. Make-up effects by Dick Smith!
Dead Silence (2007)
I don't remember if this one qualify as a ghost movie, but its attempt to recreate that solid Hammer horror feel just nails it. And dolls always delivers the scare.
The Ring (1998)
Most people who likes horror have seen it, and if not, have gotten the ending spoiled anyhow. But still, pretty good ghost movie! (the book is good too)
Innkeepers (2012)
Designed to look like a movie from the nineties. A Bit of a slow burn, though.
Shutter (2004)
Photography-themed ghost story. Scariest one I seen, ever. The movie has no originality whatsoever, but build a really scary experience with the tried and true asian horror tropes. Never seen the american remake - that would shatter my hipster creds.
