Well, a lot of this is what you classify as an ARPG. If it is top-down/isometric then my would be:

Diablo II
The Witcher
Torchlight
Torchlight 2
Diablo and Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance tied.

If we are talking 3D
Monster Hunter series
The Witcher III Wild Hunt
Borderlands (the original stand alone)
Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amular
Dragon's Dogma

I will put the Zelda franchise in the Adventure category.

GameRager: Better IS subjective.....which is also what your D3 opinion is. ;)
Nope, I even polled people pre-selected in an "I hate D3 thread" and it was unanimous. Thus I am fairly objective and so are my posts :p

Hey if you wanna defend D3 go ahead but let me warn you, if you do you'll be less popular than a hypothetical amalgam of Tauto, Kleetus and I forgot the name of that one famous scammer from a few years ago.

1. Polls are often skewed in such cases as subjective taste, especially depending on what site they are posted on/the site's userbase.

2. I also defended DNF and like Daikatana.....maybe I have sh*t taste, or maybe some people just can't enjoy a game without nitpicking the flaws all the time. ;)

Lifthrasil: I agree with your list and also in that order. Grim Dawn is the best of all the ARPG I have played.

@Darvond: Illusion of Gaia is great too. But it's not really an ARPG. That's more like a classical JRPG, isn't it?
Not really. No turn based battles, no forced encounters, and it even has action moves.
Diablo 2 would have been top in my list, but: "Ladder only content (single player lacking runewords, events, elite uniques etc)", crappy terrible abyssmal godawful drop rates/looting tables and others things, made it my last choice, really...

Grim Dawn. A real masterpiece. Better than what Diablo became.

Titan Quest Anniversary. Second best.

Torchlight 1/2. Very good, very fun, but they felt somewhat generic to me, don't know why... 3d position for sure.

Those are the ones i bothered playing, or to be precise, beating. Revenant, Divinity, Sacred, i didn't sit down to fully experience... Darkstone, Nox and others, i didn't even get, yet...

If we are talking 3D, there is only one true champion. Blade Of Darkness

*Brofist*
Link's Awakening
Terranigma
Zelda 3
Landstalker
Wonder Boy 3-5
Super Metroid, AM2R & Fusion if those count
Front Mission: Gun Hazard
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon & SotN
Secret of Evermore w/ mods
Strife
Alundra
Mega Man Zero
Gargoyle's Quest 1-2
Darksiders II
Ys IV
Soleil/Crusader of Centy
Diablo 1 (prefer it to 2 honestly, at least in SP)
Soul Blazer
Dragon View
Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu
Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II if it counts
Sid Meier's Pirates!: Live the Life

HM: Beyond Oasis, BG: Dark Alliance, Psychonauts, Zelda: OoT, Demon's Crest, Boktai, Seiken Densetsu 2-3, Magic of Scheherazade, Golvellius, Guardian Legend, Quest for Glory

I really need to play some more recent games in the genre.

Never got round to playing Severance back in the day but would love to. Can't believe it's still not on GOG!
Intheresting to see so much love for Titan Quest. I tried to love the game, but while the sceneries are pretty, gameplay felt really damn repetitive and dull and boring. I think it boiled down to the skills and enemy variety. I was using the same basic skill all the time because frankly all the alternatives were just garbage. At that point it might as well have been *the* normal attack.

It used to be, under it's byname 'Blade of Darkness'. But it was removed.

Mafwek: Grim Dawn has fucked up balance.
avatar
Wishmaster777: True this. The nemesis monsters and Crucible arena are not balanced at all.
They limit the variety of cool viable builds.
Crucible is side content and it has been stated multiple times, that the game will NEVER be balanced around it.

And most builds should be able to handle the Nemesis enemies. It is the Super Bosses which are only for the select few (and that is something I kinda dislike).

At the begining, yes. But unlike Grim Dawn, you actually get to use a lot of skills from the skill tree later on as the game is far less stingy with skill points/skill caps, allowing for effective usage of many skills from the skill tree.

GThat moment marked the time the site truly fell into decline.....that and the rampant GOG Bear attacks. 0.o
An ARPG (Action RPG).

Hmmm... my favorite in the past was ShadowRun (Genesis).

No pausing (except inventory), limited inventory, endless runs/jobs (if you want) decent story, based on the limits of the time it's a great game for the time.

The SNES version... pales in comparison in my opinion.

:D I was lucky enough to buy it on GOG, while it was still here! Great game, the first "Dark Souls" and the first pioneer of graphics techniques, like real time shadows, real time lighting effects and others.

Don't forget the different characters to play as, and the secrets. ;)
