Do the expansions add anything to the 'base' game like new weapons or armor sets and such or are they both completely separate complimentary stories?
Several new armor and weapons for Geralt, new gear for Roach.
New witcher gear: Viper. Getting all parts depends on your chosen end.
Biggest change is the addition of rune words.
New moon armor set.

They add stuff, but since they are so high level, you normally wouldn't want to go there before finishing the main game. And they are separate stories from the main game, similar to larger side-quests like the Bloody Baron one. But longer :)
