Becoming a slightly different beast.

Armello, the digital tabletop/role-playing/strategy game, has now been updated and renamed to Armello - DRM Free Edition. It includes the latest fixes and updates, plus all these lovely animals who will eagerly stab each other with pointy things in order to become rulers of the land. Oh, and it's 25% off for six days!

This edition is a complete strategic experience and will keep receiving updates that are unrelated to DLCs or online features.

Here's what League of Geeks have to say about it (full version here):

"We want to ensure that whatever platforms Armello is on, we're providing the best experience that we possibly can. As Armello moves more and more into online services (like Steam inventory and more multiplayer features) and as we begin to roll out our plans for DLC, we've been working closely with GOG on an edition of Armello specific to GOG. [..]
We've had fantastic meetings with GOG about the future of Armello on the platform and although there's no way for us to provide DLC for DRM-Free users or to attempt to retain parity with the Steam version of Armello, Armello DRM-Free Edition will see features that best suit a DRM Free experience. [...]."

Get ready to join this new era of colorful animosity with Armello DRM-Free Edition, exclusively on GOG.com.
The 25% discount will last until September 5, 9:59 PM UTC.

Dzsono: So, this and Brutal Legend are gimped in some form. Any others?
Mutant Mudds, The Chaos Engine, Slender: The Arrival, OlliOlli and others.

It doesn't have hotseat MP? Can't remember since i'm a SP player, but it is often a feature for "PC boardgames"

Heh... Looks like they took some inspiration from Drinkbox with that :-D

...
Shame on these (*blacklisted*) developers, and shame on GOG for allowing it. Pluck you both.
I see.
I think we need more information before getting the pitchforks out. What kind of DLC are we talking about here? Why can't it be brought to the GOG version? What about the multiplayer makes it incompatible with Galaxy? Steam Inventory was mentioned, which is indeed something that Galaxy doesn't have an equivalent for.

Perhaps most importantly, I would like more details about the "features that best suit a DRM Free experience". Will the GOG and Steam versions become different games over time? Will GOG have features that aren't available in the Steam version?

Though this announcement has been poorly handled given the lack of details, I don't think GOG or the developers would go out of their way to draw attention to this if there wasn't some positive aspect for us. Until we have more information, I will remain cautiously optimistic.

No, no version of the game currently has hotseat multiplayer, and it's not coming, either. It has to do with the way they implemented the "fuzzy turns" system, where you can freely move your camera around and play spell/trickery cards on other players' turns.

Here is the official response on that:

"The way game play works on Armello, hotseat mode wouldn't really work. Even when it's not your turn you can still play cards, watch what other players are doing and strategise. So you need to use your off-turn time to plan out your next turn as well as impact other players turns."

Irenicus73: I was really hoping that this was going to be an announcement that they had reconsidered their earlier stance and had decided to add proper local multiplayer into the game. Even if someone were alright with being shafted on future DLC in this release, it's not likely to get proper, offline multiplayer, from what the devs were saying on their own forums:

"Hey there!

LAN support is not super important in this day and age - meaning that the vast majority of people will have access to an adequate internet connection without relying on local network. Considering this is probably one of 3 requests I've ever seen for this feature for Armello, we really can't justify implementing it.

Regardless, thank you for sharing your position and your feedback. The insight is helpful!

Cheers"

You know, if they had given us a LAN option for the DRM-free version I would have been happy. I would consider the GoG version superior to the Steam version despite not having access to DLC. The base game is quite good.

The kind that comes out today on Steam, apparently.

Also apparently, you need an account to their forums for the full dev statement on the matter. If anyone could just dump those musings here, much appreciated.

And off the wishlist it goes, but not into the cart.

Clearly they're not proper developers, since they need the tools provided by a distributor in order to support their own freaking game properly.

I don't like it when GOG removes games from the catalogue, but frankly I'd be fine with it in this case.

I just sent the devs an email with the subject lune: "Good news!!!" and the following contents:

"You know what I didn't do today? Buy Armello Inferior Edition (TM) (R) on GOG.com. What is this about it being impossible to release DLC on GOG? You need to tell that to CD Projekt Red, Haemimont Games, Introversion Software, Paradox Interactive, ACQUIRE Corp, Stardock Entertainment, Idea Factory Inc, Arcen Games, Ironclad Games, Oxide Games, Whalebox and their respective publishers all of which have released DLC on GOG. Moreover there are plenty of games on GOG, old and new, cheap and expensive, made by large corporations and tiny indies alike, covering all kinds of genres that support various on-line and/or multiplayer features either through their own software and/or services and/or through GOG Galaxy."

Someone should make a wishlist entry for GOG removing this game. Count my vote in.

Regardless of how this turns out, I do want to thank GOG for making the missing features and DLC clear to us. This may be the first time a game has been clearly labelled as being different to the Steam version in such a way.

So let me get this straight...

For some reason, just for being DRM-Free, GoG version of Armello... we won't have access to DLCs because they are "not suited for a DRM-Free experience"?

Off the whishlist it goes and jumps to the blacklist with (dis)honor mentions until they either provide a reasonable explanation or take that bullshit move back...
