Pheace: As far as I know they pay a monthly fee for using Denuvo, that would seem reason enough
avatar
phaolo: If it is so, I understand the decision.
But a monthly subscription for a DRM system seems quite weird to me..

Gurlok: - A bunch of consumer like Doom, but they don't purchase it because they hate any other form of drm/anti tamper;
avatar
phaolo: Are you saying that the DRM-free believers have become relevant?
I think we're still too few to really matter for the industry.
That's why here new AAA games are a rarity.
I don't think it's necessarily DRM-free believers they are doing it for, as much as the perceived performance drop claimed by many that is leading to this. Poorly optimized games like Arkham Knight using Denuvo (and possibly impacting performance) have lead to an anti-Denuvo sentiment and maybe that bad press is making them rethink it.

Exactly. Tell me whatever you want but, the sooner denuvo dies, the better.
if GOG got a release of DOOM I would shit myself a little but man I am still waiting on Oblivion to hit here cause the DVD version I have is drm free but all scratched to hell.

The physical, disc based version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition is indeed DRM free, it only requires the disc to run (copy protection). It can be installed and played without ever needing the intrawebs. Same goes for FallOut 3 Game of the Year Edition, Batman: Arkham Asylum (UK version), Mass Effect 2, and Tomb Raider: UnderWorld.

catpower1980: That cursed word! :o)

Doom "4" footages reminded me of games like Painkiller & co which are closer to arena shooters IMHO rather than the level design and exploration of the old ID Software games.
They changed the design a bit from the original builds . There's a fair bit of exploration and pretty good level design.

Technically old school disk-based copy protection is DRM too (content it protects is digital) but... yeah, nitpicking. It has nothing to do with the online smut they soil disk these days with.

I remember reading about some of them. Generally the disk is low level formatted, and then files and sectors will have entries to areas of the disk... that literally don't exist, and you'll eventually ruin your drive by trying to read said sectors.

Quite annoying...

Read about such cases; thankfully never had one. Might because I tried to avoid StarForce protected games as much as possible. I would still go buy games in physical stores if disks where not all bloated with these origin, ubi and steam online enforcement.

Ahhhh I see. Yes, old times infeed. Didn't know that both Oblivion and FO3 had that lond of protection (heck, i always thought that FO3 was gfwl only).

Pretty much this, And I had a no DVD crack so I never used the DVD anymore but I want a digital version so I can lay that poor thing to rest.

I doubt it would be monthly, and if it was, it would contractually be for a certain period of time.

Which is DRM.

If it requires the disc and isn't using any assets from the DVD to run the game, that is is DRM.

No, if anything, it could be SecuROM (early version, do not confuse with SecuROM later versions) or starforce. DRM by per se is intended for only digital products; nonetheless, it's still something people against drm have against it aswell (for obvious reasons).

EDIT: Well, seems I was wrong :)

A data CD/DVD contains a digital product. A disk check is DRM. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Digital_rights_management_(DRM)

My bad. When I read the DRM word, I automatically thought about the modern drm system we have now (the "needs internet checks" ones).

Funny thing though. As myself I always thought that SecuROM and Starforce weren't part of drm due to their behaviour.
Thanks for clarifying this to me! (and sorry @Kleetus for wrongly trying to correct your right statement)

Ahhh, it's so true that the learning process never ands!
