Lately I was thinking about a animated movie I saw broadcasted on TV years ago, I think it was in the late eighties.
The thing is that I don't really remember much about it, it was about a boy who was on some kind of quest but I don't remember what it was about.
I think I vaguely remember there were talking animals in it as I think the boy had a animal companion and animation quality was better than the average Japanese anime, but again, I'm not entirely sure.

It's not Princes Mononoke (or whatever the last name) by the way as the movie I'm looking for had a more fairytale like atmosphere than that. The only thing I'm sure about that it was in a medieval oriental setting.

Does anyone know what animated movie I'm looking for?

P.S. The correct answer can have a game of their choice from my tradelist.

edit:

I credited the wrong answer, though Taro The Dragon Boy certainly looks worth checking out.
The movie I was looking for was Magic Boy from 1959.

The Jungle Book?

The Boy and The Beast?

Edit: Nevermind - you're looking for something a lot older. I do recommend seeing this one though :).

This is what the OP's post reminded me of too. There was another one as well, which features I think immortals.
These are probably not what you're looking for, but I'll take a stab anyway (they're all anime I recommend btw):

- The Twelve Kingdoms?
- The Vision of Escaflowne?
- Inuyasha?

...

Pretty much sums up every anime from the 80s I remember.

Sorry, can't help you but good luck.
Maybe one of the Hi No Tori OVA's

AFAIK it wasn't anything made by Disney, then it would have been more wellknown.

Mostly to new, but will investigate anyway.

Look promising though the protagonist seems much older than I remember, I have to investigate these too.
With that description it could even be the original Dragonball series, lol

First that came to mind for me was The Black Cauldron, though that's again Disney of course, and not exactly oriental

Most anime movies getting localized at the time were adult oriented. Heck "Manga Entertainment" didn't even exist until 1991 and that was my first access to anime movies locally, apart from a few TV-Series

Well Princess Mononoke came out in 1997. How sure are you about late 80's? Was it dubbed or were there subs?

How about Magic Boy (1959) or is that too old? Actually, I don't know if the animals talk in that.
Taro the Dragon Boy maybe?
One of the first four Dragon Ball films? (Seeing as the OG series was loosely based on Journey to the West)
