GeraltOfRivia_PL: Why dost thou hate mobile games?
Breja: Forsooth my lord, a brain doth I posses,
And fingers five on each hand of mine.
Am sure one of those fingers is a thumb...
nightcraw1er.488: Just noticed this on bbc, cat fight between Epic and Apple.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-53819226 timppu: That has been even in the main news here for several days now, even discussed in the TV morning news discussion. And it is not only Apple, also Google pulled the game from their GooglePlay store, and I was under the impression Epic sued Google as well.
I dislike most of the narrative in the media, making it look like this is about eeeevil "monopolies" forcing a poor small game development company to give a slice of their income. How dare they?!? Like mafia, right?
In one news discussion some a head of some small game dev studio agreed with the interviewer that it is like a milk farmer not wanting to pay a supermarket to sell their milk in the market, but instead starts selling the milk straight from their farm to end-users, cutting the middleman. And the eeeevil monopolistic supermarket doesn't want to allow that.
What a stupid analogy that was. A better analogy would have been that the milk farmer would have wanted to keep selling their milk in the supermarket, but not letting the supermarket get any cut from the milk sales, e.g. by letting the customers just take the milk with them out of the store and pay for it with their phone directly to the milk farmer.
And then when the supermarket would have told the milk farmer they are not allowed to sell their milk in the supermarket premises anymore, the milk farmer would have sued the supermarket. How dare they, right?
Epic is just being an idiot there. If they want to use the Apple and Google stores and mobile ecosystems to sell their games to mobile users, of course they have to give a slice to Apple and Google as well. In Google's case they can't even argue about "monopoly" because Google DOES allow selling games on Android, without using GooglePlay services. Humble Bundle did that earlier (selling Android games through their Android HB store; I bought many games from them), and I think e.g. Samsung and Huawei have their own appstores in Android as well.
The only argument Epic has is that Apple should allow the same as Google, ie. that you can install iOS applications on Apple devices without using the AppStore. EU has already questioned Apple about that. Then again, shouldn't the same apply also to gaming consoles, ie. all game publishers should be able to freely sell PS5 and XBOne games without paying Sony or Microsoft anything?
Indeed, I got that as well, the whole poor indie pub like epic just trying to make headway in the world. But the worlds media is all like that, even the bbc.
In most ways I agree with the whole selling on different platforms. I can however understand the desire from apple to have a closed platform, makes it simple and safe and Apple products are aimed at the mass market rather than those in the know. I went with apple for phone and pad over others purely because it’s so simple and just works. I have seen android phones and it’s nowhere near. Can’t be bothered to learn something for that, I mean I don’t use them that often. It’s the same issue I have with Linux, just don’t have the time, windows 10 works, has done for years. Maybe for work I would need to get more into linux, but not for home.
Anyways I ramble off topic there. As I say, there will be some behind the scenes deal as epic has the power to change “rules for everyone”.
