KawaiiSara: I will emphasize that the game will not communicate with any service outside of a simple ownership check, unless the game is fully owned by the user on that service and that client is currently open on their system.
Please would you kindly explain plainly, does it use the Internet by itself or is it communicating locally when a client is open to simply check one's ownership to do the fully owned part? I am unsure what the communication is up here.

Sure, not a problem and a fair thing to ask! It only communicates locally with the Steam Client to check for ownership. The check still succeeds if Steam is in offline mode and the game is owned for example. If Steam is closed or the game is not owned there, it will silently not use any further Steam functions. It does this through standard Steamworks API functions that are made for checking ownership and initializing the API.

Edit: To be clear, the Galaxy API implementation is roughly the same as well, I realized I didn't specify this.

OHMYGODJCABOMB: Can't stop laughing at the local clowns who downvote posts in this topic.

You are ready to set the store on fire because of DRM in HITMAN, but downvoting posts about almost a similar problem only because a developer representative threw some magic "damage control" dust in your eyes.

Would you also change your mind if an IOI rep shows up on the forum and tells you that DRM in the GOG version of HITMAN has been asked by many gamers?

In some aspects, this case is even worse than the HITMANGATE (lol). Unlike AKIBA'S TRIP, HITMAN at least doesn't interact with your Steam account.

Show me at least one real GOG user who asked XSEED to add communication with Steam account to a DRM-FREE version of the game from another store.

Do you really believe this nonsense?
How is this in any way comparable to the Hitman DRM situation?

Sara has been totally transparent - the game is a universal build that will communicate with any (or none) of the APIs supported.

In your mind "Hitman is missing a large portion of the game unless you remain connected to IOI's servers" is equivalent to "The game can (but is not required to) communicate with Steam. This can be disabled by deleting a file"?

Dude, delete the file and move on.

Interesting honestly I never knew such a thing was doable .. I assumed most code from varies storefronts/Api's in builds on here was leftovers and to be fair most of em are .. but I also must say sorry by the way if I ever came off as rude or anything like that to you the other day as if I had was not my intent

It not only "communicates locally". It writes statistics to the Steam account (playing time, achievements).

Only if you own the game there as well and if you don't want this then you can easily disable it. This is a complete non-issue.

The question I was answering was about the ownership check, and whether it uses the internet or local methods to do this. The game itself does not communicate with the internet in any way and only interfaces with the Steam and Galaxy clients (if available, i.e. the client is open and the game is owned on that service) using their respective official APIs. Yes, it will track achievements via Steam like any Steam game would, and on Galaxy at the same time, if you own the game on both of these services. This also means achievements can be simultaneously unlocked on both services if you're a double-dipper, which is the biggest thing people used to ask for. Both of these services automatically track play time when their APIs are initialized and I cannot turn that off without turning off the APIs entirely. Regardless, all of this functionality remains completely optional and is easily disabled by removing the applicable DLL file for the service you wish to remove.

When something purchased on GOG communicates with Steam is an issue.

Moreover, this "feature" is not even mentioned anywhere.

If XSEED hadn't send KawaiiSara here for a damage control operation, we would never have known that this issue exists and that it's not an issue, but a "feature".

When I buy someting on GOG, I don't want it to interact in any way with my Steam (or any other) account.

If I want a game to interact with my Steam account, I'll buy it on Steam, not on GOG or anywhere else.

Been thinking about this stuff a lot lately, and I think it's just the peasant class issues.
1000 years ago they would have been groveling in their own filth, mad at the lords and ladies, until the lords and ladies look in their general direction. Now they blend in but still have the same problems that keep them in their peasant class.

You can see a lot of this going on in all the hitman threads. The same people that've been boycotting since cyberpunk and devotion, are 'welcoming' new mad people, while simultaneously dismissing the same people in other threads for 'non issues'. Incapable of collective bargaining the peasant class will remain fractured and impotent. And yea, I suspect if shitman developers poked their head out and looked in their direction they would be quick to hop off their bandwagons.

Sad but true.

Okay, good. Thank you for taking your time to clarify.

I agree. I also see this as a critical issue not a ,,feature,,
If XSEED wants to offer it as a -feature-, then it should be somewhere on the settings menu and disabled by default.
Thanks to OHMYGODJCABOMB several problems have been addressed instead of being on the ,,We’re looking into it,, forever status.
The last I remember OHMYGODJCABOMB reported was the EA partnership and it got -magically solved- thanks to his fierce follow-up.
Please continue strong OHMYGODJCABOMB as you always do and totally ignore the bullsh*t rep system: We all know is broken & clearly abused

Yesterday when I posted on the Hitman thread I included this thread on the list of other threads talking about live parallel problems:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_hitman_game_of_the_year_edition_11093/post908

I hope this as many other problems get totally solved soon!
I think this feature is great, but also it should be optional and not enabled by default. We shouldn't have to disable it, because 99% players will play this game without knowing game is working like that, and it especially shouldn't require us to manually interfere with files.

The best option would be to get in-game option to enable such behavior. The absolute least we should get is notification when launching game how it works and how to disable it.

I hope I will see this feature in more games, but as completely optional and non-default.

That's a really great idea!

Perhaps you could update the launcher and add the ability to disable unwanted APIs instead of forcing users to delete files?

OHMYGODJCABOMB: What's definitely not okay is a situation like this. My Steam account was at risk "thanks" to the unprofessionalism of the GOG staff (those who put the game on sale in this state), and I'm pretty sure there won't be any compensation, not even an apology.
Nope, you are only guessing it is at risk, with no proof whatever.

No doubt as has been said, many GOG bought games talk back to Steam etc if you let them. Perhaps it is even a feature that ties in greatly with Galaxy use, when playing with people using the Steam Client etc.

I do rather think it naive, that you imagine GOG aren't aware of the situation and wouldn't do something if it was an issue, and we would certainly hear a big uproar if gamers got locked out of their Steam Account due to playing a GOG game, how would we not.

It would make the uproar about Hitman GOTY look minuscule by comparison.

Logic as always, is your best friend.
